Wow, that Beta seems perfect. I can't find any specs for it though, anyone got the hook up on those?

if OP can buy a $3,600 beta alp or a ktm 105/150/200, then can't that money can easily be used to plate the CRF230?

edit: nvm - he posted about a small street legal dirtbike so let's go with it

    how about a DR200SE?

To be clear... I actually prefer a converted dirt bike. Mass is hard to do though so I prefer buying something already converted.

This will be 95percent dirt use. The available small street legal ones mentioned above are too weak off road. She's had several of them in the past.

there's a basically new, plated, '12 Husky WR150 in NJ for $5,100. great little 2T motor w/heavy flywheel you can chug around on all day. these pop up quite a bit in NJ and PA already plated.

the seat would have to be cut down, they're tall bikes, but you feel like you're riding a MTB

This sounds exactly like what I'm looking for!

I'd be happy if I could find a CRF230f that's been plated to a level that Massachusetts would pass it.

yeah... I can't quite justify that considering the couple of times per year she rides.

Re: Small, street legal dirtbike wanted!

Tony, I have always felt that a street legal CRF230 would be *Great* dual sport bike, even for guys like you and me! Full sized wheels, suspension, motor, and brakes that are plenty good enough for 80% of our speed, plenty of range, easy to work on, and whisper quiet. You might just want to bite the bullet and do it yourself. The sooner you get started,.... I am pretty certain that Baja Designs and others make kits for them, so it is only a matter of a little bit of time and money.
I really miss my KDX, and I am shopping for a new bike now (Well, 2 new bikes). I have found that the Beta's have lower seat heights than all of the others, so I am seriously considering a Beta RR or RS model, as well as all others. The more reading I do, the better the Beta's look. The new 350RR is supposed to be phenomenal:

The CRF230 was perfect for Renee. She loved it and we had all the Baja parts and everything - but then sold the whole package to get the KLX250s.

The KLX was a much more competent dirt bike - I took it on a ride and had a blast. It was just too tall/heavy for Renee.

I know you've had success getting bikes titled in MASS... if that's the route I have to go I'll hit you up for your secrets.

The beta's look very cool. For me, I'm very happy with my KTM - just need to get out more this coming year.

Yeah, but I would have just bought one. The L and F are different, as far as I've heard...with the F being better offroad.

In other words, the L is not just the F with lights.

I see. I was unaware of that, Tony. I am still shopping for 2 new bikes myself (1 street, 1 dirt), so I will keep an eye out.... Right now, I am thinking V-Strom 650, and a KTM 4 stroke.

    Great choices!

I think there is a KTM350 on NEDB maybe? Very reasonable? I think it was that forum..or one of the NE dirt bike forums.

    Good luck,

Kind of wish I still had my 1977 Dt100. Not great dirt bike by today's standards but the trails and power lines were a blast.
Glad the red tough skins and Benny's metal flake helmet are gone then.

    woot! 70's wheeeeelieeeeee!!!!

considering how similar in technology the 80's XL/SL/dt/pe/whatever are to the 80-200cc XR series (which I enjoy greatly), if I ever find a cheap, street plated UJM-style dirtbike, I'd buy one!

Re: Small, street legal dirtbike wanted!

Tony, if you can find a nice one, I might suggest a 1979-81 Yamaha DT175. I had one, and it was really quite nice. I know how time can polish memories, but I would still like to find another one. With a different muffler (most of them are clogged up pretty good), they move along quite nicely. Suspension and brakes are probably fine for the intended application.
I always keep my eyes open for a nice, pristine example, and I will buy one, if one comes along.

Re: Small, street legal dirtbike wanted!

Aah, great memories. I used to rent DT175s in Latin America back in the 90s. 2-stroke, street legal, and plenty capable off road. I remember one day in the D.R. I was near the coast, riding in a cow pasture (in shorts and sandals, mind you). The pasture went up the hillside just steeper and steeper. I made a hill climb run to see how high I could make it. When I reach my zenith, I laid the bike on it's side and stepped off, putting my sandaled foot straight through the rib cage of a dead cow!!! If I weren't completely alone, it would have been the funniest sight to see me jumping around in the field getting that schmutz off my foot and leg! Good ol' DT days!

Re: Small, street legal dirtbike wanted!

Interesting reads on this thread. My son just picked up a 1979 Yamaha DT250F to help him learn wrenching & get his motorcycle license. Always loved these UJM Dual-Purpose Dirt bikes & how you would pretty much go anywhere you wanted with them. Fond memories of many miles riding my Dad's TS185 & how he used to use it to commute to work back in the late 70's/early 80's. These bikes weren't really great at anything, but adequate for having lots of fun.

Re: Small, street legal dirtbike wanted!

I'm sure they are/were fun, but no interest in getting a 33 year old 2-stroke bike.

My goal is to get Renee something easy to ride to reduce the number of times I have to stop on a trail ride. (and maintenance free!)
