The Husky '12/13 TE250 "Low" is really the best option out there. I almost bought one myself. I am not sure if they will be offered anymore, after the KTM deal. If you were to add a Rekluse, it would surely be a great "real" dirt bike for a novice.

    10-4...I'll keep looking

and frankly, I sort of want the DR200SE for myself...it's pretty much the same as my XR100R (which I love...minus the short suspension), but street legal and taller suspension

I didn't really think of the te till just now either. My buddies wife has one, and while I don't think it's all that low really, it's the closest thing I can think of that's street legal outta the box and pretty close to a real dirty toy.
It doesn't necessarily meet Tony's criteria...I'm pretty sure he's after a plated 150xc or 144 or even a 105 (another lady rider I know has a plated 105) which I think is the perfect barely legal toy for mrs ttd.

Love the looks... hate the price! She might use it 4 times a year.

Maybe I will find a used one in a couple of years.

I understand, Tony. Notice that review states that "The seat height is very low *this year*" indicating that it was not so in previous years. I am not certain, but I do believe that the "low" version is still offered this year, although many online pictures of it show a "tall" version. Maybe Husky offers both this year? I am only mentioning this because, if you shop for a used one later, model year will be very important. Perhaps the 2012 model year was the only "low" version offered.

It weighs 25 to 35 pounds more than the CRF230F and the suspension is not as good. We've gone through 5 bikes and the CRF was the one she was able to go the best on - and able to pick it up by herself.

are you sure this isn't a variant of a PKism?

    -price
-specific bike setup the way you want
    -street plate

    pick two

on the other hand, maybe I just don't know what's out there. I know everyone out here in CA think I'm crazy. I walk up the MX track with a couple guys, chatting with how I want a used dual sport for $1,000, and they all say "you gotta spend at LEAST $3,500"...and I know they're wrong. I've seen DR350's for $1,000 or less

so if you're anything like me, you're going to wait until you find it...so I'll keep looking with ya

I think the CRF is going to be the answer...just gotta find one street legal. Check out the vid below showing what the bike can do with a skilled rider. While this isn't quite what Renee will be doing, it does show the bike is capable, pretty inexpensive... now I just gotta find the "street legal" part.

Lol!!! He's spankin that thing! Nice track. When he launches, the suspension is fully sacked out! That guys pretty good. This reminds me of the headlight class at STIMILON

ya I'm not denying that it's the right bike and what it's capable of, and we've already found a couple with a street plate so we know it's possible, but criteria #3 on the PK trifecta is price - how will we find one that's cheap?

Finding one locally and in good shape are really the only criteria. I don't like buying used bikes from far away. I haven't been looking much but will start again so hopefully one pops up.

i think all parts can be bought for ~$500, lower seat, lowering link and spacers for the forks.

the low seat alone (~$130) is supposed to be ~1.4" shorter. could always shave the stock foam for more drop ($Free).

greg is right, Husky only offered the Low for a year or two. (maybe only 1 year)

Typeone - The seat height on that bike looks *much* lower than my current KTM 350. Like I said, I was very interested in buying one, but I never went to check one out. I am not very tall (5'-7", 30" inseam).

If a local dealer would honor that number, I'd grab one! Who's the local dealers around here?

My husky guy says that bike plus tires, a gearing change, and a rekluse should equal bliss.
He also says those blowouts are happening because of the ktm ownership thing. .02

Wagner Motorsport in Worcester and Armands Powersports in Halifax, MA.

maybe give Wagner a ring and see if they can work with the Georgia dealer (?) both are Husky/BMW. Wagner put a 'bike finder' on their website... you found the bike, now have 'em get it

if that doesn't work, the dealers down in Jersey seem to be a little more eager to work with you.

too bad the dealer i got my TC from in NH isn't still around. they bent over backwards to find the exact bike i wanted.

    Thank you.

I actually spoke to Renee last night about this and now we're questioning even getting her another bike this year. Her schedule this summer is pretty full. If we end up going to Hatfield - Mccoy trails later this year, we might just rent her something.
