    SuMo bug

I am really thinking of running the lites class series next year.

Had a blast playing around with my nephew today, started off super easy and timid, but worked up to a good pace, which would be very competitive in the top lites classes that run the track.

    Nice,

I heard the ERSMA lites class gets little to no entries.

Approx $1000 to $4000 in parts if you do the conversion yourself.

Rims are bigger and suspention is softer?
    Braking is tighter?

Just asking because I was thinking of picking up a Motard to run at the track and fool around on the street with. There's a SuMo for sale, but wasn't sure if it would work for what I needed?

Rims are usually wider and smaller, making both the front and rear 17". Suspension is usually stiffer because you will be able to brake much harder on pavement. Front brake rotor is bigger and requires a relocating bracket. Using the stock caliper for most applications is fine, and same with the master.

Little off there. 17" rims usually, suspension much stiffer, and a larger rotor etc

So, if I could pic up a bike that was set up as a SuMo, but just wanted to ride it at track days and on the road, what do you guys think? I probably would never go off road since I already have a dirt bike.

Just make sure the bike was geared for the track and go rip it up! You might want to tweak things as you go, but a sumo that is already set up should be fine. Just remember that you might have to regear it.

    Re: SuMo bug

If you're not going to race it, I'd steer towards a 'production' street sumo like a DRZ 400SM vs a converted 450. The MX/SX targeted bikes have far higher strung motors that need more care and feeding to keep happy when hammered on pavement vs their milder cousins.

I've been thinking about your 520sx, big dog.

What's the gearing on that thing, cause I would probably rebuild the engine and run it as is.

    Re: SuMo bug

I have ridden Kurlon's 520 On the street alot its a freakin hoot. the only problem is its a tiny gas tank and it does not want to to sit in traffic. In the twisty's there are no faster bikes.

If you really wanted to make the sx streetable, it'll need an aftermarket tank, probably a thermal switch and fan for the radiator, and a seat. All pretty simple/standard things to make a dirtbike a streetbike.

Clarke and IMS large tanks are pretty easy to get for most bikes in normal or fugging HUGE capacity. Fortunately for Katooms a lot of years are interchangeable so eBay/ktm-talk will likely have used options. The seat is fine if you're a fan of Corbin seats, aka riding a plank with a plastic veneer... I'm not up on who to talk to about softer seat foams or complete seats? Thermal switch and fan shouldn't be necessary if your cooling system is setup properly, especially if you go to a higher pressure/later model radiator cap and plumb in an expansion bottle. The only times it should potentially get pissy is REAL hot weather and you decide to idle for 20 mins at a light. My suggestion, don't do that. : ) You can also fatten the jetting a touch and really drop the running temps.

if you don't want to experiment with foam and covers yourself... check out Renazco Racing - Dual Sport Seats. not cheap by any means, but the user reviews are usually very good.

You could just ride it. Take it out to the twisty's and ride it. Stop at gas stations, Split lanes don't sit in traffic.

Use it as a bike for riding

    No commuting
    No riding to the bar

    You will have a blast
