Well, that was downright mint. Track in perfect condition, perfect weather, and so few people it was open track all day with no groups or sessions to worry about.

Straight up moto heaven! Two of my friends actually ran their bikes out of gas on the track...

PS: word from a pretty credible Southwick crew is that last Wednesday, a local guy who is a very good but nowhere near a national level rider went crazy, as he is known to do, and cleared the gap at mx 388 that we call the gravity cavity, (the real one's at Unadilla) which is that section just past the sweeper under the old announcing tower when running counterclockwise...the same jump where the old pictures were taken of JoJo Keller inventing the "bubba" scrub. No one videod it; sounds like there was little or no buildup or fanfare. I remember some national rider did it in a 500 once back in the early 80s, but I haven't heard of it being attempted since. That gap is the scene of my most painful crash and from the pit racing going on after the this most recent feat was recited, sounds like I'm not alone.

Sitting on the start line, look at the first turn as it turns right...look beyond that point, you see bikes going from right to left, and then making a huge right hand sweeper, then going up a hill to a peak that most people try to scrub. This kid just held it wide open I guess and sailed over that whole gap, landing on the flat above that leads to the left hander that sends you back riding along the chain link fence. He's a known nutcase on a dirtbike, had some success racing before but isn't known for discipline or commitment. I forget his nickname but it has to do with the fact that he chain smokes (LOL)

...I will add that when I heard the story, I said, "you are telling me that some kid from Southwick did something no national rider since the 80s has attempted? The answer was that the track was freshly groomed, and that in the normal whooped to hell condition, it would still be impossible for almost anyone to do. With a fresh track, someone could rail that sweeper on the outside in fourth and hit it with a TON of speed

Oh, going the other direction his ramp would have been the REALLY steep drop? I think I get it. I haven't run the track CCW yet.

Yeah...this is the direction the track was usually run for decades of nationals and nesc. Most people stay to the right over this jump because on the left side the uphill landing comes up really quick and is extremely harsh. My famous wipeout there was in 1990, last lap and one turn from the checkered flag of my first ever race. I was trying to pass an arch enemy that I knew from home, collided in the air, crashed hard, and then got up only to have another bike falling from the sky, hit me in the ribs with his front wheel, knocked me down, and then the rear wheel tore the sole off my boot while holeshotting my lower leg (LOL). So...my wife was waiting near the finish line for me to come around, but didn't see me and just saw the medics running towards the gravity cavity. That was the first and last race of mine she ever attended!

I have this picture in my head, from when I got to my feet after the first part of the crash, and heard a bike in the air panic revving before it hit me... I clearly remember seeing the "flagman" who was a kid about 12, at the peak of the jump, totally oblivious and looking the other way. If he had been paying attention and waived his freakin flag, I wouldn't have been landed on.

Here is JoJo Keller inventing a way to go fast thru the section without either clearing it or hitting the G-out uphill landing on the other side. This is the actual lip and direction we are talking about, circa 1980, and where he is looking is where most people ride, but this kid recently allegedly sailed over

THanks for the pic. That's what I was describing. Would be pretty big double, but teh ramp is huge if you can get the speed through that corner.

holy balls, that would be a gnarly jump! that corner after (left hander in this case) always seems to be rough no matter what direction you're running.
