    Re: Supercross 2017

Daytona typically is a lot closer to an outdoor MX race than an SX race. The soil and layout are MXish with jumps and berms that are SX features on the course. That and the fact that the course is outside and not in a domed stadium as a lot of the SX are outside of California.

Due to the long slender nature of where the track is placed on the tri-oval typically leads to long straights and some tight switchbacks.

Rough couple races for RD5. Really worked for that finish at daytona. ET3 looking good. Glad to see some consistency from him. He may make a championship out of this if RD5s luck doesnt change

ET3 impressed again. He made a really tough track look easy. I've never seen Dungey race so hard for a position!

What was with the 450 Main start? Musquin jumped the gate, and it flipped forward, yet they did not restart, nor did they penalize Musquin.

    Re: Supercross 2017

An Cycle World observer opined that - when a rider jumps the gate, it normally "binds up" the next couple of gates next to him - in this case, Dungey and Anderson. Both got terrible starts. RD was obviously upset at the end of the race. That was the first time I can recall seeing him angry. He threw his goggles track side in frustration.

Tomac is making this really interesting. Did you hear Dungey say "no big deal, it's just a dirt bike race" in the interview after the race? That sounds like a man who's realized that he doesn't want to risk a serious injury by riding above his comfort level to me. He has a wife & kids and other priorities now. I won't be surprised if he retires once his contract is up.

There's another local running in the 250 class. Eric Grondahl from Portsmouth NH. I think his Dad owns Southwick now.

Yeah think his father also owns or started planet fitness. Another new Englander on the 250 east is Dakota Alix. He just got a pretty good sponsored ride.

It should be interesting to see how Roczen comes back. That crash had to mess with his head a bit and it's hard enough to hold on to a dirt bike with healthy arms, at mortal speeds on mortal tracks, never mind the speed and terrain he faces with an arm they had to worry about "saving"

He's young and seems to have a great attitude, though, so who knows. If he's affected and IF Dungey is over it, could change the mx landscape considerably.

    Re: Supercross 2017

Not saying that his and my injuries are the same and/or that I ever had/have a chance of riding at the level that he does but I did suffer a very similar injury to my right (throttle) wrist and it took a little while but I was able to get it functional to the point where I can do my day to day job and still ride without issue. Admittedly he did also do some major trauma to the elbow on the same arm but with the level of medical expertise he has access to I would hope that he can come back to racing at very close to if not the same level that he was at prior.

You mention a valid point about the mental aspect of things, my injury happened while I was being stupid on a relatively steep hill and not so much now but when I first got back to riding off road any large downhill or hill climb and I would have to push myself to do them mentally. Before then I never realized just how much your mind can affect doing simple things due to having been injured doing them in the past. I can't say that there isn't still, many years later, some hesitation when approaching a steep climb or descent.

I stumbled across this yesterday...arguably one of the most qualified motorcycle riders to ever address the topic of mental recovery from crashing:

If you are talking about Roczen I think it is up to 9 or 10 at this point

getting tight. RD1 cant seem to catch a break off the start. NJ round could shape up to be a big race.
