    What tires do I want?

Been forever since I've had to purchase dirt tires. Riding the NEAR rally in a few weeks at F&F in NH on my KTM 300exc. It's street legal, but I don't care about tires being DOT (although I suppose it's a bonus if there are good dirt tires that happen to be DOT). Any recommendations?

I think Dunlop D606 is still near the top of the recommendations for what you describe. I just read a writeup the other day where a guy built a KTM 690 that he claims he is setting up to run on a MX track as well as street ADV use. They picked D606's for that.
I've run D606s on a DRZ on a MX course. It worked better than I expected.

Re: What tires do I want?

Thanks! I have definitely run the D606 in the past and will take another look now. I honestly don't even know what I'm running today. They're black...pretty round...have some tread, I think.

When I lived out west I was riding ~10 hours every weekend and could tell you what tires you wanted for what day of the week it was. Now I'm pathetic and ride like 4x/year.

Are people still running trials tires on their dirt bikes? Those used to be "cheater tires" because they made everything feel easy.

Re: What tires do I want?

Simply for the price, I'd skip the D606 and go with a Tusk D-Sport Adventure rear (it's basically a carbon copy of the D606 at half the cost).

As for the front, I was actually relatively happy with the D606 out front, although I do get some slippage from time to time on wet muddy surfaces. I'm going to be trying an MT21 next. Everyone says the holy grail for dual sport riding is D606 rear, MT21 front, so we will see soon.

FWIW I ride all the same trails that surround the Harrisville Rec Center on my CRF (and I live 10 minutes away).

Is riding on pavement a normal part of your diet or you just can and do sometimes?

Do you care about tire life?

Anyway, F&F has some gnarly terrain, I’d just put some hero tires on there life be damned.

It’s rare and I don’t care about tire life. I’ve never been to F&F so that’s good to hear!

I've been pretty happy with the Geomax. I hear the Starcross are really good, too. Both mx tires, but they seemed good in the woods in the j days I've done.

RMATVMC currently has a rebate on Michelin tires and mousse (mousses?) FWIW.

Saw that, but think I'm gonna skip the mousse route for now

Pretty sure you don't have to buy a mousse to get the rebate. None of those ADV or street tires use a mousse.

If you don’t care about wear, I favor the Pirelli MT-16’s for mixed New England conditions. They work well in everything but super sandy conditions. You’ll find lots of opinions on woods tires around here.

I put on a Kenda Washougal II front and Trackmaster II rear for my 650+ mile dual sport trip throughout Baja Mexico. I bought them specifically for the various terrain in Baja: deep sand, mud, rocks, etc. The bonus is they are both DOT and not expensive. Highly recommended if you hit a variety of terrain.

Re: What tires do I want?

i don't know what F&F is or the terrain but if you're thinking about trying some super gummies, i'm still in love with the IBEX F+R set. they don't last but grip is rad.

used to be a massive Motoz Tractionator Enduro fan if you think DOT and longer wear will become more important in your search.

MT-16's are always a great choice for New England ... could also check out the IRC VE-33S or IX-09 Gekkota

I currently have a knobby on my 500EXC but I've run trials tires in the past and will do so again after this tire is spent. They are great in the New England woods environment where you encounter lots of rocks and roots. Just don't expect high speed cornering ability on grass without a berm!

I put hybrid on my YZ250X, it’s a Maxis standard tire that comes on the KTM Freeride 250R. It’s got a bit more knob spacing than a standard trials tire and a stiffer sidewall, while keeping the gummy trials compound. So far, it’s wearing pretty good and I’m running it around 10psi

My 250XC was a former NETRA A level race bike, Bridgestone M59 front, Dunlop D803GP trials rear, mousse at both ends. Did amazing in dry conditions at Area 51 on the Hawk ride, I've heard mud is the potential weak point for that trials rear though?

Just pulled the trigger on the MotoZ hybrid trials rear and a Tusk Recon hybrid front...fingers crossed! I also got some 4mm tubes.
