    I tried...I crashed

I went dirt riding today. First time.

    Mud - check
    Transverse a hill - check
    Woods - check
    Logs - check
    Woopties - check

Flat riding on firm dirt - boom.

I am now sporting a dinner plate purple bruise on my leg where the bars decided to land.

Can't fucking wait for next week so I can try again!!

    Nice! LOL

The road rash is finally healed on my forearm and elbow from a RUPP incident a few weeks ago.

Ha, Jane, don't think you've gotten the crashing thing out of the way. It's more of a several per ride thing than a once in a blue moon thing. It certainly helps with learning to tuck and roll.

one crash per ride, is a damn good ride for experienced riders! so I'd say you're doing pretty good for a new rider...

what's your riding gear arsenal look like?

    Oh I'm sure of that!!

I thought I did quite well for my first time and how ironic that the minor injury came from something so simple and not from what I thought would have been harder!

Working on gathering some gear for next time. I guess I have to go read Gino's thread.

Me and my bright ideas, had only jeans and my hiking boots and a jersey with my street helmet!

    Thanks!

I just ordered some pants and a helmet and I am watching some boots on ebay. That leaves me needing what? Chest protection, gloves and goggles?

Motorcycle Superstore if having a fantastic clearance...if your in the market go check out some of the prices on dirty gear in the clearance section!

Knee pads, elbow pads, kidney belt.

Great thing about dirt bikes is the gear is super cheap compared to road bikes.

Unless they're used, I'd stay away from the >$99 boots.
The thor's, oneals, msrs, they all pretty much suck. A* tech3 for a budget boot that is actually awesome. Rockymountainmc has ridiculous closeouts too.

^ and DennisKirk as well. I started with some cheap thor boots. Waaay better than hiking boots, but nothing compared to my sidis. Check adv rider for great used gear deals...

+1 on Sidi MX boots. I broke my ankle wearing Tech 3s. I'm sure that I would have just walked away if I was wearing my current Sidis. The gap from cheap to real boots is big. It sucks that the good stuff is so pricey but they are so worth it.

+ 1 on good boots , they are pricey but the alternative is the possibility of not being able to go to work to be able to pay for them .

I have the tech7 alpinestars , not their top of the line but not the cheap ones either . the don't have the removable bootie but offer a lot of stiff protection and are still comfortable all day long .

I am not sure rigth now if there are any of the "womens" model boots that are of the quality you should be looking for , we looked at the alpine star stella for leah and ended up gettinger her a mens tech 7 also because it offereded better protection. She has has the fox ladies and thor ladies models in the past and they fell appart quickly and didn't give the same support as the new boots .

Tech 7s are a great boot. I love mine. I had tech 8s before that and I didnt like them. Just wish the sole was a bit tougher. I chew them up quick.

Astars tech 3's aren't awesome suuure they're cheap but the protection is mediocre... alpine stars, top of their line is the tech 8 which is decent...but just go for a sidi.....don't foof your ankles
we don't have good luck with tech 3's they fail and alpine stars will gladly make you go 5or more weeks without boots, then put some niice bondo over the spot that failed and call it fixed

    Re: I tried...I crashed

I'm not going to get myself into any knock in wood type situations here but I like them, and I'm sticking to it. I'm also not racing mx, either.
I also have a hard time believing JUST a pair of boots saved radas butt.
Jane is smart enough at this point in her life to buy the best gear she can afford, I'm sure...doesn't mean I won't see pics of her cruising around in flip-flops anymore.

    Re: I tried...I crashed

I have a pair of Alpinestars Tech 7, they are good boots but very stiff and take a long time to break in. Last year bought a pair of Fox boots, Forma 3 I think, whatever their higher-end boot is. Very quick break in, very comfortable, much lighter, and a whole lot cheaper than the Tech 7. I'll stay with Fox in the future.

Just for accuracy, the Tech 10 is Alpinestars top of the line boot; I know several people who have switched AWAY from them because they offer NO feel for shifter/rear brake/footpegs. Missed shifts on jump faces are a bad, bad thing. The 7 has a similar lack of feel, IMO.

    Jane,

What size boot do you wear? Someone may have something laying around for you.

Also, buy the best boot you can afford, your feet aren't growing anymore so it will be a long term investment in a critical piece of safety gear. I like my gaerne Sg10s a lot.

I have a pair of tech 10 and while they are comfortable, I don't like using them for the very reason you mention. There is no feel at all for the shifter, brake and foot rests. I've read the tech 8 has much better feel and a smaller inside bootie.
Also the removable booties are a HUGE plus for keeping things clean.

    Re: I tried...I crashed

It's not like I was riding Bare ass in boots. That would be too shocking. Actually in that case the Tech 3s failed me.

I was actually lucky to escape with just a broken ankle that day. Ass over tea kettle in front of the pack at the start of a MX race is not cool. I could have used one of Woodcrafts lever protectors that day. The front brake got activated by the guy to my inside then the fun was on. It was a nice ride in the meat wagon.
