    Whoa.

My bosses 20 year old son crushed his L1 vertebra yesterday riding MX. He raced all through high school, etc. Sobering to hear.

Sorry to hear... That's a nightmare. It's selfish of me, but that scares me more than a "lights out" crash.

so shitty...it's a saddening reality, glad he was doing something he enjoyed, and hopefully there's a chance for recovery.

    Re: Whoa.

I hope he'll be OK, this is always tough to hear.

Last summer I was in my backyard looking over to my neighbor's to the south. They have a 24' above-ground pool. I watched as a 17 year old boy jumped in head first, and he didn't come up.

He survived as the host's mom is an RN and she was there in a flash, but he's a quadriplegic now and probably will be for life.

Kid is already up and walking, etc. It's quite amazing to me after such an invasive procedure as removing vertebrae!

    Re: Whoa.

i broke L4, then L5 and my Sacrum in separate incidents, and it sucked and took time but it got better. The shitty thing is he will always have to sit up straight, and do situps and stuff to strengthen his core, to keep from getting a sore lower back. But man, I'll take a sore lower back over not walking any day. Tell him to hang in there, take things slowly, but if it doesn't hurt, to keep moving. Any atrophy that you can prevent is a big step toward recovery.

I am glad to hear that he is up already. Active recovery is what it is all about, he has my best wishes, I know it is no walk in the park.
    heal up.

Wow, they friggin REMOVED the vertebrae? Crazy. I figured they'd try & piece it back together and fuse it or something.

That's just fantastic news Paul, and he is SO lucky. I'm sure he knows that and is thanking some deity.
