    Winter maintenance

I tore into the SX125 tonight. Pulled off the suspension to send to Kates. Greased upper/lower steering head bearings. They were getting a little dry, so that was good. Pulled the swingarm. Things still looked good, but I packed some fresh grease in the bearings. The lower shock mount has a heim joint in the swingarm. This is frozen in place, so I'll get it pressed out and replace it with delrin bushes. The hiems are notorious for failing.

ANyway, when I get my suspension back my winter maint will be done!

sweet, do you use a certain grease for your stem/bearings? I was using the waterproof Belray stuff and now I need to buy a new tub so wondering if you recommend any certain type.

Yeah, Chris, that was one of the things I tried to check after that muddy day. I couldn't feel any play between the swingarm and shock, but perhaps it was binding...

That'll catch up to ya sooner or later. dirty machines are best disassembled and reassembled once a year. All moving parts are subject to water and dirt infiltration.

I managed to press out the hiem joint with my bech vise and a 23mm socket. Bent my vise handle in the process... The new delrin bushes seem like a much better idea as the fill the boss so no dirt is getting in there.

    Re: Winter maintenance

If I recall, some of the KTM linkage isn't suposed to be greesed? I remember pulling the swinger and shock off my 525 because I had a small squeek noise, turns out the squeek noise was from the brake return spring. All moving parts on mine had a teftlon coating and I coulda swore the manual said do not use greese?
I used to completely take my bikes/quads apart every winter and clean/lube every moving part. I've been slacking the past couple years on that..but at the same time hardly ride in the nasty stuff enough to warrent that type of teardown. This winter I know for sure I'm taking the Raptor apart completly to give it a once over. If I have time, I may do the same to the KTM.

I feel the most important maintenance you can do to any offroad toy is to clean it after every ride. If you think about it, if you don't clean it at least before the next ride, you're just wearing that same dirt into places it shouldn't be..over and over again

    Re: Winter maintenance

It's not a greased part. I only greased the bearings. The swing arm joint is suppoed to be dry, but it gets wet, then rusts and siezes.

I don't know, washing gets more water into the joints... maybe bringing dirt in there with it.

I ride in some seriously abrasive sand. It gets in everywhere no matter what I do. Teardowns are great for the bike and make it feel brand new in the spring!
