Well basically there is no access for dirt bikes or ATV in RI, other than a world class trials riding area, and the occasional Rhody Rovers event.

    https://turnto10.com/news/local/dem-...ke-injured-him

Not taking a side on whether environmental officer was justified in shooting at him, but usually dirt bike press is bad press and I can see the DEM cracking down on riding even further.

i wonder how he was injured...says near an access gate...was the officer blocking the access gate trying to get the kid to stop?

I think a lot of those access gates have narrow paths around them from mountain bikes and dirtbikes, but not sure if they were just near the gate.

yea that's what i've seen at other riding spots...enough space for a bicycle/dirtbike but not enough for a quad...maybe he was blocking the opening with his vehicle and the kid tried to ride around through some dense brush and couldn't ride fast enough and the officer tried to grab him as he rode by?...purely speculation...i'm just trying to think of a situation where an officer on foot can get close enough to a fleeing rider to get injured unless he was hiding waiting for the rider...or do the officers ride quads or dirtbikes out that way?

I think they only use quads for search & rescue type stuff in RI. I did see a DEM SUV once coming at me head on in my lane when I was on my street bike and he was passing a couple ATV on the road. That I found excessive as I was in the path of the SUV. Maybe the rider just took a run by the officer like buzzing the tower and the officer felt he fired in self defense. I have no idea but be interesting to see what comes of it. Again I think the main thing will be more crackdown on riding.

Shooting at someone on a dirt bike that is evading a ticket seems a little extreme to me.

I think it was someone on here that said MA/New England has a rich heritage of off roading, but it’s slowly disappearing to environmentalists and home developers. Getting a dual sport seems to help everywhere, but all in all the 70’s/80’s freedoms are gone. Kids are on their phones nowadays anyways and can’t afford it. Time to get an ADV bike for the old timers who still venture out

Totally depends on location. Arizona is not lacking off-road opportunities in any sense, freedom is alive and well. I wonder how long Maine will hold out, the new governor may not be off-road friendly..

One of the reasons mountain biking is so kick ass in New England. Can ride pretty much everywhere.

Re: This won't be good for RI dirtbiking

I'd have a few holes in me if cops/epa shot at me every time I ran away. If someone is charging at you with a dirt bike, you move out of the way. Maybe if they circle back again with clear intent to run you over it could be justified, but I think most people on dirtbikes/atvs running are not looking back.

And wtf, MSP make over 200k a year? Good ol' boys.

Edit: As I look back on this post...a lot of judgement on my part. Maybe the dirt biker was legitimately threatening this cops life. And maybe this specific MSP trooper runs a gang squad or something else and is worth that much salary.

    Carry on.

Extreme for sure, my guess is this being Rhode Island, the officer will walk away without even a slap on the wrist.

What’s sad about this, is the ORV users would pretty much pay a healthy fee if provided a place to ride, where mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrian pay $0 to use the land.

I grew up riding Big River where this happened, it’s not the first time an officer has been run down by a dirtbiker

Mountain bikers also do a fair bit of maintenance on the trail systems. I never realized how much until I joined a couple clubs. People in NEMBA and local orgs do a lot to keep the trails up.

That implies local ATV/ORV clubs don't, which is absolutely not the case. Pretty much every week of the year my local club for example has a work party rolling somewhere.

For awhile I was pretty amazed at how well I thought just riding mountain bikes cleared the leaves off the trail. It was incredible how clear the trails were yet how filled with leaves the rest of the woods was!

Then one day I saw the guy with the leaf blower.

They don't allow OHVs at Big River, correct? Went Mt. biking there once this summer. Would have some fun terrain for sure. I like to hike/mt bike AND trail ride. I think if they allowed trail riding more places, lower volume of users might make it easier to share... or not. What a dilemma.

Correct, no OHV's at Big River. Foxboro (wrong, state, I know) does it right. They have a large multi-use area and there are selected trails OHV's are allowed to use within the network.
