When you want some help? I'm ready for some riding
I'm down to help. I'm good with an axe, pick mattock and a shovel, and, I can run equipment if you really wanna get wild. Hopefully you plan something for a weekend I can make it.
I personally would prefer the longer length... as far as being too hard to maintain, that's a different issue.
I think the longer length would reduce the chance of it becoming boring - mainly for you!
When do we start working on this? I think after almost 2 years I might be ready to start dirt riding again.
Wow, thank you to everyone for the offers to help. I'm already picking away at a few things on my own, but I can see how having a few hands would really speed things up. Seems I have to avoid weekends with trackdays, and lrrs days to take full advantage.
The more I look at it and think about it, I'm thinking more of a fast trail, than full blown MX. I think it'll suit the current layout better, tho i'll still have to avoid some sections to make it flow better. Once the layout is made, then figure in the jumps and kickers. I'm certainly open to ideas if anyone wants to stop by and check it

I'm down to help out and do some riding after
Back in the day I had a nice wide open track in a cow pasture... It was 1.5 miles and was plenty long. I rode a couple woods based tracks and anything between .75 and 2 is awesome. Like Paul said you need a bit of a safe zone off each edge of the track. As far as layout is concerned. Flow Flow Flow. If all you have is stop and go you will have nothing but braking bumps and acceleration bumps connected by corners. This gets old fast.
Sounds like fun... Too bad I live on the other side of the moon......
Some progress this weekend, hadn't planned on doing much work on it, but ended up getting some good hours in, also with the help of the neighbor.
Cut probably 20 trees, pulled the stumps, and pulled a few hundred rocks out of the rocky sections. It's gonna be a ton of work, but figured I'd get it widened and rideable before adding the jumps/kickers. Neighbor made a kick ass berm in one of the switch back corners..I think we will end up with quite a few of those!
Also scored about 20 yards of free fill, delivered. For now, I'm going to use it to fill the holes from pulling rocks.
Got a few things keeping me busy the next couple weeks, but think i'll be ready to put some time into it after that.

Nice! I just got back from Kitt's with some fresh intel for you. His woods track is .8 miles, and lapping it feels like 2 miles! 2:20-2:50 laptimes. The amount of hours he has in to that length track is phenomenal. I would set you sights in the .5-.8 mile area. When you are repeating laps, it's actually not advantageous to have too many corners. It just slows down your learning potential.
Berms are key, but some flat corners are needed for variety. Jumps and walls can be effectively used to slow the pace on the straighter bits.
Good point. Now that I am older and wiser I like a technics and relatively slow track. Helps with trips to the ER
Mark if I can be any help let me know too. The more time in advance the more time in I can guarantee.
I've been plugging away at this weekdays after work. Have spent the majority of the time pulling rocks and stumps.....a LOT of them! I tried a few bury holes to get rid of them, but I really didn't gain any fill..because I found a bunch more rocks while digging.
It does flow much better, as I took out several trees and burmed up some corners...it still feels a few of the corners are to tight.
Pending the weather, I may work on it some Sunday and ride it as well, if anyone is interested. Be nice to get some more ideas from other riders.
There's no jumps or anything yet, I've just widened up about 5/8 of a mile of trail at this point
Place is a death trap! Lol jk. I'm working Sunday but I wanna come and help
I can't do anything this weekend but I can possibly come next weekend and help out.
Mark, at loudon when we removed stones and rocks outside t9, more surfaced. It's like a sea of stones around these parts. Rhodie is even worse! I'm guessing after riding, and rain, etc. you will still have a rocky track. I'm sure it can only be better than it was though!!!
Want some help this weekend? I'm dying to get some dirt riding in.....
I'll be in Maine at the netra enduro. I deff wanna come down and jam out.
Waiting to hear back from my house/dog sitter for the following weekend, it's a holiday weekend and I was planning on heading north if the house/dog sitter is available. Thank you for the offer, I'll let you know.
I'm planning to do some digging for a bit tomorrow after work if you want to stop by. Saturday I have family plans (looks to be a wash anyways) but free Sunday pending the weather. I think a couple people are planning to come over riding Sunday, so probably not much work action.
Any time Chip, just let me know.
