    Dumb Track Day question

Ever since I got back into riding this past season, and riding hard on some of the group rides, I have to admit that the track bug has bitten me.

Now, short of going out and investing money into a new (or used) track bike, is there any way to find out if this is something that I'd like to do?

Does Tony's or the NESR offer trials or spectators on these days?

If so, what's the cost? What are the requirements? I'd hate to invest money into something that I'd end up not liking.

Tony has an excellent program where you can go and watch for free and you can also cornerwork (after a brief training session) and earn cash credits towards future trackdays.

You are also more than welcome to take the trip down to VIR with us and spectate.

Cornerworking gets you one of the best seats in the house & earns you some track day bucks.

5 bucks says 1/2 way through the day you'll be wishing you signed up to ride instead of watch

It's not that I wouldn't want to ride, it's the lack of a bike I don't mind wrecking. I wouldn't dare put my CBR on the track. She's way too clean for that.

    Dumb Track Day question

Look at Tony's page of "Excuses" Before I had any other bike or a trailer, I used to ride my zx TO and FROM the track.

Yeah, crashes happen at trackdays, but whether you crash or not depends on your DECISION to crash or not more than anything else. I'd say at least 75% of trackday attendees ride their minty fresh street bikes on the track.

    errr.... what they said.

Seriously, if you're afraid of crashing your bike on the track... then you should sell it.

You have the option of rolling around the track at 10 miles an hour in the RED group.

Whether or not you crash at track day is dependent on whether or not the NUT is properly torqued....

The NUT that attaches the seat to the bars.

    Dumb Track Day question

It's really up to you if you want to risk crashing. The track is actually a safer environment than the street as the pavement is much more consistent and there are no SUVs driven by Moms talking on cell phones. When you ride in the beginner group there are strict passing rules and the instructors are quite good at making everyone behave nicely.

That said, the more you ride on the track the more you want to try exploring limits that are just way beyond anything you'd ever do on the street. It's when you get into the unforeseen territory that crashing becomes more likely -- at that point you might want to consider getting a beater track bike.

    Dumb Track Day question

Afraid of putting the 97 CBR down. Don't be. I thought the same thing when I put my brand new 2000 CBR 929 with 800 miles on the track for the first time. Nothing happened. The only time the bike ever went down is when Dinora Fernandez ran a stop sign while I was going 30mph. It is much safer on a trackday, where you control the situation. You control the thingy on the right, how much depends on you. You will not find a more well organization than TTD. I tried a couple others for different venues but I still ended back with TTD. The best learning experience I have encountered.

Well, I'd probably be scraping up the cash to do a track day, so coming up with several hundred more for plastic is probably not an option. Thanks for the offer though.

If your thinking of Racing save your money now.

If you only want to do a few trackdays a year then try one out and see what you think. (you'll need to get alot of the stuff to go racing with so you will be halfway there)

I "know" if you try it you will be back.

I know where there is a Honda Hawk GT for $1500 and an even nicer one for $1900

    Dumb Track Day question

This is a common fear-- that you'll crash your bike.

People think "racing" when they think racetrack, and since a track day is held at a racetrack, well, you get it.

The fact is that we keep the rules tight to minimize problems that happen at Race events, which track days are NOT.

Crashing depends on the rider more than anything else. And we cater to people just like you who are new to the track experience. So come on in, the water's fine.

    Dumb Track Day question

Chuck, you have nothing to worry about. Sign up for a track day and go in the beginner group. Then take your time in getting used to the track and bring your speed up when you feel comfortable.

My first track day was my first time ever on any track. The biggest problem that I see is people who are so anxious to get out there and go fast and forget about cold tires.

I'll warn you though, it's addicting as hell.
