Re: 1st track day tire question

I ran Pilot Powers for my first track day, and since then I've been running Pilot 2CTs and love them. Give it a couple laps to come up to temp and you'll be good to go. I've seen guys in the blue groups go out on new, shiny stock bikes with no warmers, and they're running circles around me, so I highly doubt getting warmers at this stage will do anything but burn your money.

Factory Wet weight is 904. http://powersports.honda.com/2012/go...fications.aspx

I had more aftermarket "safety chrome" on it at that point (from the PO) than I do now, and than it did when the factory weighed it.

Somewhere just shy of 1k, officially. And I'm somewhere just over 200 lbs as well.

Me and the bike, in combination, I promise was over 1200.

The tires will be fine without warmers. Focus on learning the track (turn 1 goes left at NH) and learning about being on the track (passing, pitting in and pitting out, etc.). After your first two track days, spend your extra money on personal instruction.

Brand new tires, picked up a nail with 30 miles on the clock. Plugged'em proper, had 4000mi on the plug when it got to the track. Would I race on the plug, no, but first time track day pace, hell yeah.

Re: 1st track day tire question

Well I am officially an idiot moron that wastes money on the unnecessary and goes overkill for a newbie who will not even be fast or pushing hard. Ebay hole burning in my pocket saw a deal 2 year warrentee for under $150 to my door. Rather support the local vendor but over my price range as my credit card is hurting after the $$ I have put into my bike and gear this year. Well over $3000

Certainly won't hurt anything (other than that smoldering smell coming from your credit card ).

Pack up the (large gauge) extension cords. See ya next week!

Just don't waste time putting on warmers when you should be in the classroom.

Guess which one will help improve your performance more?

Honestly warmers at a track day is a waste and a giant PITA. Not worth it imo.

Re: 1st track day tire question

You're starting out early, you can only go up from here, and going up means moving up to better and more expensive warmers! Then you're gonna wanna replace those cloth hangers for stands, with something beefier. Then you're gonna wanna replace those front and rear shocks from stock to Ohlins, then you're gonna wanna replace stock bodywork with race bodywork, then you're gonna want a cool paint job on that race bodywork. Then you're gonna want to get a one-piece custom race suit, new helmet, tinted visor, race gloves, race boots, ohlins steering dampner, extra wheels with rains, aftermarket rearsets, power commander V, electronic quick shifter, reflash ECU, lap timer, gps lap timer, AMB 260x transponder, motion pro quick throttle, renthal grips (soft), aftermarket shorty levers, folding levers, brembo brake master cylinder, full floating front brake rotors, stainless steel front brake lines (don't need rears), aftermarket subframe and fairing stays, titanium sprocket nuts, aftermarket rear sprocket to suit your track, K&N air filter, K&N oil filter, safety wire tool, frame sliders, spool sliders, and geometry optimization. Did I forget anything?

Uh, yeah. Helmet fan! You'll need two sets of everything cause you gotta have a spare just in case. Slicks. Spare motor. Rain bike. Trailer. Truck to haul trailer. Garage spot. License fee. Race entry fees. EZ-up. Generator. Pit bike. GoPro. Personal instruction. New part time job with flexible hours and unlimited vacation. Some dude to take over your family responsibilities.
Oh wait, this is a first trackday? Never mind, I was getting carried away. It will be weeks before any of that stuff is purchased.

    But don't forget the sunscreen.

One lesson I've learned... IF I'm going to buy something, I prefer to buy it ONCE. I only buy what's absolutely necessary and buy whatever will last me the longest.

This goes hand in hand with the old philosophy that sometimes you need to spend money to save money.

Most recent example for me are my 100 dollar safety wire pliers... they'll last me 10 times longer than the shitty 40 dollar ones that were going dull every 3 years.

Just go and have fun. The only person you really need to listen to is on the microphone. "Novice group riders to the classroom" or whatever color tony uses.
