    Turn 2 @ loudon

i've recently heard that turn 2 is notorious for poor traction when it rains or gets cold. one hypothesis is that turn 2 is over the tunnel, which could cause more rapid cooling/poorer run off.

what is known about this phenomena and the underlying causes?

    turn 2 or turn 1A ?
there was an issue early last season with a painted line on 1A that was slippery in low temps, but that was taken care of in May.

never thought about the tunnel affecting, that could be part of it. The rain issue is also because you are going back onto the nascar oval. T12 is also slippery in the rain up high when you get onto the oval.

The issue in T2 is pavement changes. It is the same as T11. There is newer pavement, which is smoother and provides less traction in the rain.

Usually, it's additional input in either of these corners that results in lowsides. Ask me how I know.

    Re: Turn 2 @ loudon

Primary reasons for T2 crashes in the wet:

Water build-up at the apex (not as much of an issue anymore after the re-design/re-pave)
Surface characteristics (again, not as much of an issue anymore after the re-design/re-pave)
Elevation changes (between tip-in and exit, the suspension loads, unloads, loads, unloads and loads again.)
And the biggest cause, IMO, rider input (get your steering input done as early as possible... set it and forget it back at your tip-in point).

I was going to say that I thought this was fixed when they redid that section of the track.

It used to be that there was a triangle at the apex of newer pavement that almost felt like tar snake material. If you didn't hit your line to take you away from it in the wet, you would definitely feel some slide. I've never eaten shit there, but I've had enough pucker moments that I tip toed through it all day when it was wet.

I have answered this question numerous times this year. The biggest factor is the pavement changes. Where the older pavement is, you can actually slide in your sneakers when it is wet, then when you grab you can highside yourself. If you can do that at 1mph in shoes, imagine at race speed on slicks.

can we get some video of this. Some rain sneakers might help.

Haha! Don't think anyone caught the "demo" this year on video.

the new pavement they laid down during the fix tends to get a little slippery when wet.

I walked it this year when wet, and like Keira said there are parts that you can just slide around in your sneakers. That walk actually changed my line through there for when it's wet.

    Yes it is better....
The issue has always been water collects there after running down the track bringing with it oils leached from the track surface. It dries leaving the oils behind, over and over again...

turn 2 is slippery when you get back onto the oval when its wet/raining. its just the way it is. theres no scientific data to confirm or deny why it is what it is...it just is. i pitted inside T2 for years. if it was raining...SOMEONE was going down in 2...guaranteed. adjust your line to minimize bar inputs and just be careful with the throttle.

    Re: Turn 2 @ loudon

After my extended visit with the T2 corner workers and a flashy lights wagon ride in the rain, I adjusted my like for T2 in the wet. I try to set myself up so that I can use one input to get the bike turned BEFORE the transition from infield to oval so that when I hit the seam the bike is already mostly upright so I'm essentially straight tracking over the danger zone, my only input is throttle modulation from that point. To do so I'm a touch to the right of center after T1A before hauling it over. It leaves me vulnerable to someone going for the inside gap I setup, but if I'm on a bike with actual drive I have an opportunity to try to regain the spot before T4. If I'm the GS well... lets not discuss it.

    Re: Turn 2 @ loudon

I feel like the reason behind my two T2 rain crashes, aside from the rapid, repetative loading and unloading of the suspension in an already-low traction situation, was too hard, too early throttle application.

Turns out that even on an SV, you can't whack the throttle in the rain right after the apex of 2... Who knew???
