Air is 78% nitrogen. If the "other components" in air did in fact escape more rapidly than nitrogen we would all be running (effectively 99%) nitrogen in our tires after 3 top offs.

We would fill our tire with 78% nitrogen. The pressure would drop as other stuff leaked out to 78% of the previous pressure. When we topped off we'd be at about 96% (I'm calling it 80%, and 80% of the missing 20% is 16%) nitrogen. The other 4% would leak out. When we topped off we'd be at about 99% nitrogen.

Again, regular checks are much more valuable than nitrogen as if this theory is true you get nitrogen anyway.

It's the water (moisture) in air to be inconsistent in its rate of expansion and contraction with temp change. On any given day/place when adding "air" to your tires the humidity level in the air (and air compressor tank) is going to be different.

Dry nitrogen is what's the discussion is really about. not particularly how much nitrogen vs. other gases (nitrogen does have a much more consistent rate of expansion and contraction).

Nascar uses it, F1 uses it (also adds some oxygen), why not you. Dry nitrogen is easily and cheaply purchased.

to be confident there's a max amount of dry nitrogen in tires - just deflate and reflate with dry nitrogen two or three times and you are there.

Now you guys have me curious as to the relative size of a water molecule as compared to a nitrogen molecule...

Not that it really matters to a slow guy with a compressor and a good gauge like me.

airliners run nitrogen in their landing gear tires because of the safety from explosion factor

long haul truckers also use nitrogen as it helps tires last longer with more consistent pressures

if I had tire pressure monitoring, I'd consider nitrogen, many places include nitrogen fill when you buy a tire package

As far as I know Oxygen in a free gas exists as an O2 molecule

IMHO the advantage is in the lack of moisture in dry nitrogen
Good air from a system with a refrigerate dryer would be fine

Yes it will defini8ly shave 0.000000001 secs of your lap times
