GPS Lap Timers for track days

Bought an early QSTARZ unit at the track from Lou. Once we got it set up the data was tremendously useful. But it seems to have stopped working.

A GIS found the following. Any feedback?

    Dual XGPS 160. About $130.

    RaceDAC. About $200.

    QSTARZ BL 1000GT $230.

    VBOX Sport. $430 plus mount.

Garmin GLO2. $100. Doesn’t seem to have track app.

AIM Solo 2 for GSXR About $700.

    And the RaceChrono App.

Garmin GLO 2 + RaceChrono Pro is my setup. An iPhone won't cut it though, it will be seconds off. So most use an old Android phone, myself included (bought an old Galaxy S3). There's a good technical explanation out there but apparently Apple devs locked out GPS tracking with external devices to the degree of accuracy you'd want in a lap timer.

I think it's the best sub $200 setup, and you can immediately review a track map and see how fast you went through specific turns once you hop off the bike. Can't do that with most other timers.

You don’t need any cell service? Just the phone?

FWIW that's a newer model. Mine is the older non-S and is apparently obsolete. No GLONASS. Doesn't have some of the newer features listed there. See here.

No SIM or cell service needed, just wifi to pay for and download the RaceChrono app... and to apparently authenticate it once a year as I found out the hard way after the winter.

Gotta make a decision. Really hard to get better without looking at data.

GPS Lap Timers for track days

I can add feedback on the AIM Solo (1).

I really like it. It is simple; easy to use interface; always finds satellites and the relevant track quickly. I use it only to check my lap times after a Friday practice, race or trackday. I do not use it for any hardcore data logging, and I appreciate that you mentioned above that you are looking for data acquisition. (I know enough about myself now that if I have to transfer data to a laptop to review or just to be able to quickly review laptimes after I have worked on a corner or technique — the unit would not get used after the novelty wore off.)

But far more than that, the AIM customer service has been peerless: I bought the Solo on a Friday, totaled a motorcycle in a race on Saturday in such a way that basically destroyed the Solo unit. I called AIM, said that I didn’t expect a hand-out, that I bought their product and destroyed their product, but that I liked the product and just wanted to get to a place, whether by repair or buying a replacement unit, where I could keep using the product. (Despite this, the unit actually seems fairly robust to me.)

They had me ship the Solo to their U.S. repair center in Virginia, whereupon they repaired the unit (new screen, new chassis, GPS unit out for testing), and sent it back to me for free, no questions or intimations.

Seems like a great choice but really expensive for a slow track day rider....

Is there an hour glass option?

Pretty unanimous feedback on Solo 1 & 2.

    Where to buy?

Before you pull the trigger, have you considered a bar mounted hour glass may be sufficient for your use?

    Edit:

Well fuck. Now I scroll back and see you've already pulled this joke on yourself. Well played, dad.

Do you have a camera on the bike?

That's going to be far more useful to getting faster than a lap timer.

Do I want the Solo 2?

Or Solo 2 DP, which enables a data link to read ECU info?

Kind of cool to geek out but not sure that would help me on the track.

Didn’t use it last time but yes.

I find the corner data invaluable. Married with video should be great. I’ll be going fast enough that mosquitos won’t be able to bite me anymore!

I have a Garmin Virb Elite camera for sale if interested. It has GPS, accelerometer, altimeter etc. It overlays the data to your video. Very easy to use. I have various mounts etc also. Looking for $200 OBO.

Got the Aim Solo 2 in yesterday, just in time to leave for TTD today.

Nice rugged unit, buttons seem big enough to use with gloves. Software seems easier to use than the QStarz product. I’ll have a review after Sunday/Monday.

Re: GPS Lap Timers for track days

Had a chance to use it yesterday and it's pretty handy. Reads out the lap times after the session and shows top speed.

My lap times improved during the day, from 2:26-ish with a top speed of 87 mph down to 2:18 / 2:16 / 2:12.4 by the end of the day, with top speed of 112 (average speed 66.6mph).

    Very useful.

Does it do zones or sections? I found that data most interesting.
The real serious cats use it for testing different lines, shift points, etc. I never got that good at nerding out.

There is a lot of functionality I haven’t gotten to: it arrived in time for me to charge it and mountthe bracket. There is a bunch of graphical data.

Apparently my top priority should be remaining upright.

Yeah. Lap timers don't work upside down.
