Question helmet-mounted camera OK for track days?

Hi, I got a cheap "faux-pro" camera over the winter and used it at the Fishtail track day on Monday. It worked OK except the mounting spot I chose (passenger grab rail on the Monster) wasn't as good a vantage point as I had hoped. I got an adhesive helmet mount but before I glue it to my new helmet I thought I'd check:

    - are there any track day organizations that won't let me use the helmet-mounted camera?
    - are there any track day organizations that won't let me use the helmet (even without the camera) because it has the mount glued to it?

    Thanks!

By my interpretation of Tony's Rules helmet mounted cameras / mounts are not allowed.

I've seen them run at a Penguin day last year, so as far as I know they are OK with them.

I've seen that setup pass tech. I have also heard the staff very strongly advise against it.

I'd mount it on the handlebars if I were you.

    > CAMERAS, GPS, Lap timers, etc. must have a HARD TETHER to the bike. This can be a bolt, safety wire, or zip tie. SUCTION CUP, or STICKY TAPE does NOT QUALIFY.

That seems clear. Thanks for the link.

I'll try that, thanks. I guess with the camera pointing forward I can get feedback on my lines and with it pointing backward I'll see just how awful my body position is, as long as the lens is wide enough.

If you can safety wire it to your helmet I'll put a sticker on it (that is, until Tony tells me differently).

That link is for tonys not fishtail. Tonys is the only orginazation I know of that does this. 2 others groups I ran this year did allow untethered helmet cams.

I teathered mine anyway because I think it's a good idea.

As mentioned... we strongly advise against it, but will pass if it is safety wired to the helmet (through vents or what not).

The critical thing is to wire it from the camera case itself, as the mounts are what break. On GoPros the part that breaks is the part that has interlocking "fingers" so it can pivot.

And the older the camera mount the more likely it is to break... so saying, "I've had it like that for years" is exactly what we DON'T want to hear!
