This too! I put the stock pegs back on, reconnected the lights and such and took it to the dragon this summer. Of course I always look at pretty 600s and wonder, but after that trip, it solidified this bike for me. While on communicators with Paul, I said I love this bike fro all that is does. I won't be doing an iron butt on it or anything but for twisties and the track, it is awesome.

By the way, this is me at Palmer with rear sets and springs in the front suspension. And yes...that is my big old rear fender still on her. What you can't see is the grin on my face!

I have to say though, the thing that made me fall in love with bikes initially was the acceleration of 600cc I4s. The SV does not have that. If you are still in the acceleration honeymoon stage, the SV will be disappointing the first time you pull onto the straight and open it up.

Re: Help me pick a track bike

In the ultimate world of reason and funding everyone would start off small and work their way up the ranks from an ultra-lightweight to lightweight to heavy.... You learn so much riding a bike with modest acceleration around the track. It also doesn't punish you as much for dumb mistakes. Tire cost is nothing in the ultra-lite class. They last forever. The SV's tire budget isn't so bad but the I600's and up tend to really eat tires.

Most importantly - Racing is fun in every class. It's not the bike that makes it fun. It's the close racing of matched classes. Either having unlimited budget or keeping cost down help keep it fun. SV's are the hot bike because most people don't have unlimited budget. SV's are inexpensive to both acquire and to race. Same with other smaller capacity/output bikes. (Except the EX500 Those things are shit!!! lol)

But if money no object I'd be at the dealer putting a deposit down on the new R6 with its save my bacon electronics. I have a 16 R1 and the wizardry of that system is amazing. No question about it. It's non-intrusive and works. I'd get a sponsor to cover my tire budget and... Ya I have an R3 and weigh more than it does. I don't care it sounds like a sewing machine. When I'm racing I'm mixing it up with the cool kids in the class and having a blast.

Thanks to Pete at Computrack Boston for his help getting my Craigslist find R3 from goofy streetbike to FUN race bike and for the support at the track as well. Definitely an awesome resource to lean on if you want help with any part of setting a bike up for the track.

I've been racing the same SV for 7 seasons now.
There's nothing boring about trying to click off another 1:15 around Loudon on a very well set-up SV.

That said, I also understand that it's not everyone's cup o tea, so... look very carefully at your budget and do whatever floats yer boat.

I myself would love to race an R6 or some other 600, but the cost of tires is always a deterrent for me. I have to keep my costs as low as humanly possible to be able to race as much as I do and going to an R6 would effectively triple my tire budget.
(note that others may not see that big of a jump in their tire budget between the two bikes... money vs speed is an exponential equation.)

Depends on the track. Some tracks, like Loudon, don't give a 600 all that much of an advantage over the SV's. Depends on how much room the track gives you to stretch the bike's legs. If you're spending a lot of time over 120mph, then yeah, the 600 is gonna have more of an advantage.

Re: Help me pick a track bike

    I'll chime in.
Over the last five years I've spent turning my 600rr into the ultimate track/race bike, spending over $35k on the way. It's been a blast but I've never gotten as quick as I would like on the bike, and it has everything I could ask for.

Oh this weekend? I'm getting a Sv650 race bike delivered for $3250... a tenth of the cost. It will probably need a few things but honestly, save your money and don't worry about 'outgrowing' the sv650

Re: Help me pick a track bike

The best bike is without a doubt ANYTHING YOU LIKE!
It's a fact ride what you want.
There is no secret bike. Buy what you can afford to ride like its stolen, except you need to replace what you break, and repair it yourself within reason.
Don't worry about settling up for weight, HP, or looks. Any bike can ride a track as long as it's true. A 300 can go quicker than a unlimited CC BIKE and if you get fast on a LW and pass a liter bike there is few things that will make you feel like that. Not to mention the shit talk you will be able to dish out and it's the ultimate MIKE DROP BOOM. The Bigger the bike the more of a rush of speed but will not always be the best teachers.
Choosing a track ride is extremely subjective to an individual due to who you are. Ask yourself what do I want to. Do I want to race, hone my skills, give my buddy the bird while dragging my knee sideways in turn 1 or all of the above? How often can you afford to get on track? Track days, tires, spare parts and racing are not cheep. That is what will dictate what you want to get.
Ideally get something that comes setup with all that stuff if it's cost effective.
    BUT FIRST AND Foremost...

Ride the bike that makes you want to ride it. Buy an honest bike from an honest rider/racer make it safe and buy good gear. The fun will be overwhelming. If you crash get back on as quickly as possible, but never ever ride scared. If you're scared by a crash or the bike makes you feel uncomfortable to ride you will almost certainly get hurt and worst possibility hurt others. Understand this will be a life changing endeavor. If you family or friends are on board with you even better if not, well I hope you're single. So be prepared for what's to come. Be over prepared it's a must to do this. Never be shy to ask questions but understand just cuz a guy has expert #'s on his bike does not make him a bike expert.
There is a lot to take in sift through it and do what you want not what your talked into.
Remember not many do what we do as often as we do it. There is a reason for this WE ARE ALL INSANE FOR SPEED and shit talk faster than we will ever be on track. So be prepared for that and you will be around some of the best people in the world.

P.S. I'm writing this on a iPad and it's a pain in the ass for me to do so if some of the stuff I write seems like a am illiterate well I am but iPad posting doesn't help
