Ignore me. Isaac has it. Rachet the throttle (click click click) up.

If the rear does step out just hold where you are, do not chop, do not increase, give it time to recover.

    Ratcheting the throttle

    Hi Tony!

Basically you want to treat the throttle like a ratchet. Make mental "clicks" as you consistently roll on the throttle. If you start to feel the rear slip hold the throttle where it is (at that click). The mental ratcheting mechanism will not let you roll off the throttle. Hold that throttle position consistent until you feel the rear regain traction, at which point you can resume your throttle roll on and then pit in a check your trousers to see if you need to change them out.

    Oh yeah...bring spare trousers!

    Congrats on being addicted soon!!

The ratchet technique is secondary to this other "RULE".

Never. Ever. Ever apply throttle while leaning the bike, only while standing it up (on exit).

I'm a bit overtired here. Am I seeing things or did smutty just use the word "trousers"?

    Jason is on a 1928 Honda CBR600. I am on my SV650.

We both felt we were starting to put some things together. Dearest potato man felt the need to smack the pride right out of both of us simultaneously and remind us that school was still in session. It worked.

I always straightened the bike while leaning my body into the corner i am exiting more in order to increase the size of the contact patch...but I don't think that is what you are referring to. I am assuming this is already a pass on the outside after the apex of the corner.

And wtf is wrong with trousers bubsss?!

Ding, Ding, Ding... we have a winner!

Increasing throttle should only be done as you reduce lean angle.

One of the main reasons for exit crashes are because riders do not get the bike turned enough by the apex. They are now past the apex and their eyes are seeing the next straight so they apply throttle. However, they realize they are not pointed enough down the track so they continue to turn or worse... turn more!

If you blow a corner, then don't stack one error on top of another. Get the bike pointed correctly and then start reducing lean angle as you apply throttle. Better to blow a corner and lose a little time than highside.

The beauty of a TD is no passbacks. You can go rambo on the brakes to make the pass, then blow the corner and run wide, stay off the gas the whole way around while you correct your line, then recover on the next straight!

    ...I'm totally kidding

    ...sort of

When you start racing and the red mist descends, you will make this mistake a few times despite our warnings. LOL. Unfortunately, you really CAN'T learn from others mistakes when trying to be fast. The hard pavement is really the best teacher.

    Re: Overtaking advice

i do something similar to sav but its tough to do with such huge speed/hp differences.
to pass in 3 i start in 1.
take a wider entry into T1 and late apex it
then late apex T1a and hold it
turn in later for T2 and late apex that as well
this will have you exit T2 very low (on the inside) while the other person is running out towards the wall up high. because you late apexed T2 you have a straighter trajectory and can get on the gas way way sooner so when you get to the halfway point between T2 and T3 youre at the very least going as fast if not faster than the person you are trying pass.
as they start to slide left to set up for the braking zone and turn in T3, you are moving right which puts you on the inside. basically your lines crisscross. he will move over in front of you and you will move over to where he was.
you only have to brake slightly later and get next to him. after that he would have no choice but to concede the position and let you go. just be sure that if you go into that turn side by side that you hold a tighter line so as to not run anyone wide by accident. this will mean that you will have to take the corner slower than usual

This is super important. I was at a TTD a couple summers ago and it started dry, and then it turned into a steady drenching rain, completely soaking everything. I was bummed, I brought both my bikes and thought, what the hell, it's just water. It was a GREAT learning experience. Tony opened up the track to all riders since almost nobody was going out, so for a few laps I shared the track with only a handful of other bikes. I learned a lot about traction management, and more importantly, I learned just how much grip the track still has when wet.

The only downside was that my boots got soaked!

Wrap your feet in plastic bags before putting on the boots. It won't keep your boots from getting wet but will minimize your feet from getting wet.

Or you could get some rain gear to put over your boots.

Not that it matters, but I *think* Rada was on his 1K Gixxah. It would have looked the same if he were on the SV.
