And I will say that Tony does run a very structured and well instructed track day. That being said, I think if there were other orgs allowed at palmer, it would regulate the price there. Also, everyone keeps mentioning the instruction at Tony's, but the majority of them aren't paid and I would say a huge amount of TTD customers have been going for years and probably don't even attend the class room sessions.

Right. Staff that isn't paid (short of having their meals paid for) means that the included instruction has no real bearing on customer cost. If we ramped up the program to be a "school" then costs would go waaay up because staff would need to be trained to a higher level and then be paid. But, we chose long ago not to go that route and instead focus on quality track time with optional instruction available.

This may happen to a degree, but remember there is only so much profit. I think some people think there is a huge profit being made by the tracks, and that is just not the case.

If we keep pinching the track owners and forcing them to very tiny profit margins, then the tracks will eventually fold up and become housing developments.

    Re: Price of trackdays

What is the cost to rent a track around here? Or is that secret info?
I was priced out of trackdays long ago. I'd love to be able to do 4-5 trackdays a year, but that's impossible for me when coupling costs with taking days off from work. Even 1 day a year is hard to justify now.

The price will vary by track.

I don't understand how you can be priced out, however. The cost for a Sunday now is only $50 to $75 higher than many years ago (when Mondays were $225).... and it's closer to you so no hotel and less gas.

So no time off work, less travel expenses... and maybe $75 more for a day? In the end the total cost is same or less.

I guess I should say my life choices have priced me out. I can't personally justify spending $300+costs for one day of riding. I get that costs increase each year. Nothing you or we can do about it.

    Re: Price of trackdays

it really comes down to value and value is different from person to person.
few years ago I would probably pay $275 for a TD (i assume thats what it costs now).
Back then I cared about instruction, classroom, traffic, overall way the TD is run.

Now i really dont care. I have done cheap track time as low as $100-150 for a full day of riding (CCS practice) with zero structure and different levels riders on the track and even paid a high premium $250 for 5 sessions @ Daytona because that was my only option to ride and learn the track.

Most street riders and intermediate level riders get a lot of value riding with TTD (thats why there are still so many people with him).

Also dont forget the business model up here is that they have to make all their money within 6 months..

I would not agree with that. Especially with the "huge amount" bit.

    Let's ask the man.

Tony, what percentage of your customers would you say have ridden with you for over a year and ride in intermediate group or higher?

my observation is that the track that you go roundy round the same 12 turns all day already has more traffic than the rural roads that I ride on a daily basis

Well given an even distribution among groups, you can ignore the first criteria (over a year) and you're already talking about less than half.

EDIT: Derp... for some strange reason I thought you meant the top half of intermediate and higher.

Maybe but it's all going the same direction and everyone is looking for motorcycles.

At least it's traffic you can easily pass, or pit in for a few seconds to get away from. I actually find track traffic a little exciting because it brings in another factor of strategy into track riding.

Curious... What does this have to do with anything regarding pricing?

There's virtually no cost associated with staff that would disappear if we removed classes.

I just notice that a lot of people mention how good the TTD instructors are in this thread as a justification for going to a more expensive track day compared to a more "bare bones" track day. It made me think that a large majority of your customers have probably been doing track days for a while and don't utilize the instruction.

Bubba disagreed with this thought, so I thought I'd ask since you know better on the subject. Pete's answer was good enough for me though.

So if you do happen to crash, do you want to lie there for three hours until someone happens along? I like riding remote twisty roads too. I just feel safer at the track. I have yet to see a track that has a "Tree of Shame" or any makeshift memorials where someone steamed into a tree after blowing a corner.

I have no disagreement with the reasons that people choose to do track days

they argument that the risk is less is invalid, there are more injuries and bike damage per mile at the track

the discussion in this thread is cost of track days, track time cost is divided by the number of riders , the more riders , the more risk, the choice is spend more money for a track day with less risk or spend less money and accept more risk
