They are going to keep the oval and use part of the straightaways as part of the road course. It's a 1.6 mile course that it similar to what was there in the 70's, but with a number of changes. The best guess at an opening date right now is in the Spring of 2014.....they will probably have a basic road course together by the end of this season (late fall).
These guys are looking to build a nice club level track and have been receptive to feedback. There will certainly be track days there in 2014.

Wow! 20 minutes from me, can't wait!
Looking at the picture, looks like a fun layout for sure. The one thing that catches my eye though, is the bridge to the infield. Am I the only one that thinks it's a bad idea to have a bridge in the middle of a corner like that? Granted I'm sure it will be protected, but that section has to have limited runoff..or at least without the bridge being 150' long. Assuming the track flow is counter clockwise, it looks like a safer and less costly place to put the bridge is in that small straight section on the main entrance.
Honestly, the only reason I really thought of it was the slim chance to have a New England round back in AMA racing, it seems that would be a safty issue

I'll be able to send weekly updated pics in the spring when golf starts up again. That's my home course and go almost every Saturday morning
All - Thank you for all of your positive comments and support toward the re-paving and re-opening of the historic road course here at Thompson. We were planning on putting out a more formal press release next week with the accompanying image after we release our 2013 racing schedule and rules. The info that is being passed around in in fact true and did come from us. It was distributed to all the clubs, groups and schools that have worked with us to develop this plan and go through feasibility over the past two years. To clear up a couple things in the comments below. The venue, when used as a road course, will be primarily for club events, i.e., PCA, BMW, SCCA, etc, high performance driving schools, corporate outings, testing, etc. Our primary goal is to re-pave the historic course, upgrade degraded asphalt, safety barriers and overall facilities and amenities. When there are oval racing events the track will transform back to the traditional oval configuration. Parking will take place the same as it does now during oval events. Again, we will be releasing more on the facility upgrades and r-paving project over the next couple weeks. Any questions or concerns please message the facebook page and we will contact you personally.

so im as excitedd about this as everyone else is however my largest concern is the large number of demolition derby events that are held at Thompson each year and how that could affect the track surface on the oval section of the track ie. fluids, pavement damage etc. probably not as big of an issue for cars but for us guys up on 2 it could turn having a new track into a nightmare real quick.

Go to the Thursday night races and watch those cars, this isn't the NASCAR a lot of guys on here are thinking. We have friends that race a Sunoco Modified there, and while those cars are tip top, the lower classes of cars are beat up and leaky. For motorcycles to run here there will need a significant way to keep the oval surface clean. That said, if this comes to fruition I may be buying another track toy, this is < 30 minutes from me.
R7, RIZ and KB1 all have excellent points that should maybe be brought to the attention of the powers that be at the facility. especially if they are as open to feedback as people say they are
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

Yes, TTD will be there when they open in 2014.
