    School me on electric bicycles?

I have been thinking about picking up an electric bicycle or electric skateboard as a 'pit bike' for next year. I want to leave it in the bed of my truck all summer (I have a locking tonneau cover) as I don't want to clutter the trailer and will charge it at the track as needed.

    - How much should I expect to spend?
    - Any particular brands or models I should look at? A cursory google brings up "anker" or "rad" as companies offering electric bicycles?
    - I assume that because its meant to only be a pit bike, I don't have to worry too much about range or battery capacity. Is that true?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Had one a long time, built from a hub motor kit, later upgraded with a 48V LiFe battery. Mid-drives have replaced hub motors except at the low end.

Are you on Advrider? There’s a lengthy thread there, plus most bike forums have an eBike forum.

    You might consider a folder.

I recently got to demo most of the Fifield ebikes. They are a fucking hoot.
Their folder was okay. But the real fun was the 500W fattie they had. I can't wheelie anything. Fortunately I was at the demo with a kid who can. He was able to loft the 500W fattie and hang 'em for days. Super fun.
They had a couple more skinny tire roadie type setups too. One was some sort of custom with a ton of power. Somewhat shockingly quick.

I have owned 2 Neo Jumpers for 2 years now. you can expect to pay from $1500 to $5000 for a quality e-bike. I suggest a visit to E-Bike of New England. they will let you demo a few.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I'm thinking electric skateboards are more my budget. I have zero interest in commuting or leisure bicycling or any form of remotely related physical activity that may make spending serious coin on a bicycle worthwhile.

I wasn't cool enough as a kid to have a skateboard. This may be my time.

Have you ridden a hover board before? Stupid amount of fun, would work great at the track. Also, have you ever seen hover board fail videos? *Most* people who haven't been on one before and try and jump on one result in instant hilarity....great theft deterrent for your garage mates who like to steal your pit bike. This one here is an "off road" model with 10" tires. Just think, when you're out overlanding in the Rappy you can whip this thing out of the bed during trail breaks and buzz around.

No electric unicycle for you though. Rick Breen has that locked up.

Interesting....! I have never been on one. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll research hover boards.

Tons of fun. Fail videos are usually pretty good. Lots of broken tailbones and whiplash.

If you want to roll like a boss you need a Segway.

I would look hard at Razor scooters. Yeah they are made for kids but they are cheap and you can mod them a bit for adult use. You won't get huge range but it'll work. Plus they fold up real small.

OK I got this bad boy recently - It's a Schwin S500 I believe. I bought it off of craigslist so I have no idea about what year, history etc.

500 watts? Thing has more than enough juice to haul me around at a brisk pace. I was originally thinking of removing the seat and seat post, but upon using it, it's actually pretty comfy Handlebar folds and I keep it in the bed of the truck plugged into the outlet so it's always charging.

Re: School me on electric bicycles?

Put some super mega long fenders on the bike today. 10 times more fiddly than it should have been. The front is deep enough to keep any schmutz off the battery, not sure about the mid-drive motor.

Thinking about a windshield and heated grips for the winter. Or at least hand guards.

I have some cheap neoprene ones. Revelate designs (out of Alaska) makes the real deal ones.
