Another thread about track day tires.

I know this topic has been covered in varying detail, but my mind keeps flip flopping. Here is the situation help me out. I already jacked an sv forum tread about this, but more input is better. My SV needs a rear tire before I ride again, otherwise I would stick with the q2s unil they wear out. Last year I got into trackdays with my SV and towards the end of the season I was riding slow advanced group with average lap in the 1:28's (hopefully drop 3-4 seconds this year). Anywho the bike sees about 50-85% track riding (street riding is on sunny days). I'm throwing up te idea of getting something like the GPAs or bt003 pro to replace the q2's. Obviously the front tire would have to match as well.

So do I make the switch to a DOT and take it easy on the streets? Or do I stay with the Q2 until things start to get weird? Ive only had 1 slide in 4 with them and i know at my pace the tire still has planty of room o grow. That said, it seems a track tire is a bit of insurance. I'm torn. Any help or recomendations is always appreciated.

Get a second set of wheels with a race compound dot and keep the sreeet tires on the other set.

I've been thinking about that a lot.but I have to be honest and admit that it's unlikely I wil take the time to swap back and forth every trackday.

It's a lot cheaper and easier than fixing your bike when you bin it either on the street or on the track. You'll get quick at the tire swap and when you start racing it'll help when you switch to rains.

As a matter of fact if you take Smuttys advice, put race DOT's or slicks on the trackday set. Bring both sets with you. If it's raining or cold or a damp track put your street tires on. If not, run the track tires. Tires are one thing I never want to compromise on again.

It really only takes 2 seconds. There really isn't another answer. Besides buying a 2nd sv for track only.

You could even do it at the track the night before and get help from others. You are getting close to race pace so your options are very limited.

Re: Another thread about track day tires.

Last season I swear we swapped wheels on Christians bike at least 5 times before every race...you become very quick at it, I wouldn't let the time or effort needed to swap wheels effect your decision.

At 1:28s, I agree that DOTs are good "insurance" as you put it for the track. You can probably drop a few seconds on street tires but you'd be pushing it...if you have the funds, why take the risk.

Re: Another thread about track day tires.

Well, that's pretty overwhelming. As you all know better than I do (and want me to drops $$) I'll get on getting another set of wheels. The question now is slicks or DOT's and specific recommendations. Does anyone have a second get set of SV wheels? Thanks for the help making the decision easy guys!

Just go straight to the Ntecs. That's kind of where the road eventually leads anyway.

All the dunlop race tires are referred to as N-tecs. Go with the slicks as the slicks will get better wear. If it rains you can go do the street tires as trouble said

GPA in medium front, medium+ rear will get you a lot of life. you could even do a soft front and still probably get a ton of life out of it.

edit: looks like there's just one rear compound and I don't know what that number means. says its good for endurance racing so I think you'd be fine with it.

My suggestion is get a decent set of dual purpose track day/street tires if you dont want to swap out tires/wheels at the track . You are overthinking it. I run either B016 or 2cts on my GSXR which does street and track day miles and in 28 track days have not crashed. They are good enough for me at my speed and heat up quickly. Dont overthink it dude and at your speed I would stay away from slicks as they are a complete waste of time.

You make it sound like slicks are something magical haha. IMO he is overthinking it, but slicks are not a waste of time. Would you say a set of race DOT's are a waste of time?

As a counterpoint, I run DOT race rubber street and track. I find they work great on the street. I have just a little experience on race rubber though ;-) I'm a smooth rider, and I don't take chances on the street, but I've never once felt anything sketchy from the tires.

Paul don't tempt me the other way. I already bought a wheel.

LxPony. I have crashed. Often infact. My best is a 27.13 but I average 28.0. I know it's not wicked fast but a 2 ct is a lesser tire than the q2 I'm already running. Times a bit different on when a fat ass is on a stock SV like me vs a gsxr.

I ended up with wheels/ rotors on ebay for 300ish. Then I got some dunlop 211's for about 350. Not to bad I thought it would all cost me more. Should I replace the wheel bearings on the Ebay wheels or just run em?
