Re: First time at the track

Chuck already beat me to the links to what a typical day is like and our schedule, but I want to add that you're always more than welcome to come visit any of our events. We can even put you to "work" at a flagging station where you can get an up close and personal view and earn some bucks towards a future track day.

OR, even better, you can take part in our FREE "Try the Track" program. You get to sit through the morning briefing, and then do the Follow the Leader session (a guided session with other first timers behind an instructor). When finished, you can sign up for the day... or just hang out and do the classrooms, etc.

NOTE: If the day is SOLD OUT, you cannot sign up for the day. Also, the price to sign up at the track is higher than if you do the early sign-up.

And if you like it, here's the outline of our first timer's program

No, but whatever pants and jacket you do wear must zip together. Gauntlet gloves, and boots (I've seen workboots with leathers tucked in).

Nope - here are our rules http://www.tonystrackdays.com/catego...reparation.htm - other track day organizations may do things differently.

Meh... I did track days for two years on my one and only street bike. Buy "pre-rashed" plastics if you want, but it's not necessary.

Do a couple events on your own bike and learn what it's capable of. Then, if you like it enough, decide if a dedicated track bike is right for you.

Re: First time at the track

I didn't run my bike with track plastics the first time. Just try and take it all in & don't ride over your head and you should have nothing to worry about.

Check out either Boston Moto's or Tony's sites. They have a wealth of information that will answer most, if not all of your questions, including rider and bike preparation. Make sure you read through the rules for the track day vendor you decide to ride with. This is because they differ for things like passing rules.

Re: First time at the track

Any bike that's mechanically sound is fine for a track day. We have customers on all sorts of bikes, from full on race bikes to Goldwings to dual sport BMW's.

It's only once you decide to go racing that you need to start being picky.

Re: First time at the track

check with your insurance to see if they cover riding schools, if so then just run your bike as it sits. If not then know that it is a risk that you are taking.

Nobody should go to the track that isn't prepared to throw their bike down the track while you are on it (surprisingly that is not as scary as it sounds with the right gear)

It's not a competition. You have bikes of all types riding at the same time (motards, liter bikes, middleweight and lightweight).

Think of it more as rider training.

Re: First time at the track

i had a blast on my old yzf600R on the track, it is a great bike and it was THE race bike for Yamaha back in the day. But the 636 is a great modern bike. prep and run both of them at the track day, it will let you learn more about both bikes...

Glass must be taped or removed.
Plastic lights are fine as is.
Tape over or disable brake light
Hose clamp on filter (with safety wire if needed) so that it can not spin loose.

Other than that, it just needs to be in very good mechanical condition.

Bring lots of OJ and relax. Their number#1 priority is safety and fun. Relax, have fun, you will be exhausted at the end of the day. But the good kind. And most are better riders too.
