Re: Tire Pressures @ the track

There is a ton of sand in Dubai.

Ok, now that is out of the way, I have a YZ450F that is set up as a motard but it should not matter as these tire pressures are hot so the bike or weight should not matter right? I am running Michelin Power Race so the hot tire pressure should be 31 f and 22r. The front seems a little high and the rear seems low. I am slow running track days only without warmers. What tire pressure should I start with and should I check the hot pressure right after a full open seesion on the track?

    Thanks for help.

    Thanks,
    Nathan

Those Race tires are designed to only work with that low 22PSI. I had them on my 600rr and had to drop a PSI out of them. I would start with the manufacture recommendation or hunt around on some race forums to see what may work out with you tarded tire combination. But 31-22 is a good place to start. just monitor your tires and don't be afraid to have tire reps take a look at it or ask some instructors for opinions. + if it does not feel confidence inspiring, something may be off.

I would start with 22/28 cold and adjust them down after the first session, and again by midday.

Re: Tire Pressures @ the track

COLD pressure set at 31F 22R. The front you may raise to 32 but that's it.

Rear starting cold pressure for a C3M tire is 22R. The higher the temps, I have riders running 25R starting cold out in the midwest ( Heartland Park) on the Power One C rear and doing well. Same with Jennings.

There is not now, nor has there ever been a super secret HOT pressure for Michelin Power Race or Power One. Michelin ONLY deals in cold pressures. If you start seeing a 10 pound or such rise from cold pressure to hot, consider a change in compound - from A to B, or B to C.

    Bridgestone Race Tire Recommended Pressures
Note: These are our recommendations, they are not set in stone and not guaranteed to work for you. Use these recommendations at your own responsibility, and if you have a local Bridgestone track support person available always take their recommendations over these generic guidelines.
(Baseline is 80 Degree Day – Adjust For Temp & Track Conditions)

NOTE: Cold pressures are provided for baseline starting point only, always check temps off the warmers before first session and then hot off the track and adjust during the day if necessary to the correct hot off the track pressure. If not running warmers, then set cold and check hot off the track and adjust to the correct hot off the track pressure. Hot off the track temps should be measured as quickly as possible after coming off the track.

Chris, I actually bumped things up a psi this year in the rear and getting better tire wear with great traction. Does not step out. em!!

31-F 29-Rear immediately off the track

Off the warmers is a tough one to go by. Outside temperatrure really screws with the hot off the track temp if it is cold out. Lately, hot off the warmers is pretty near close to off the track psi. In a month expect things to drop when you come off the track from tire warmers.

Re: Tire Pressures @ the track

Hot off track tire pressure is best measured on hot pit.... by the time you get to pit area, could have lost 2-3psi.
I have noticed a 1lb psi drop at Pirelli garage (close to track) compared to hot pit.

tire warmers are no really required on track days...(they help for that off the line flat out into t1) but if you are used to using them then by all means, keeping with a program works....

On a similar note I STILL SEE PEOPLE KEEPING WARMERS ON a long time between sessions/races - to change the temp gradually - thinking the old school thought - less heat cycles.
Modern race tires - you want them to cool down ASAP. They have 170 chemical compounds that react with heat which creates the traction... keeping warmers on just keeps the chemical reactions going for no real reason other than to burn up the tires.

graham, i've heard that's the case for Pirelli's, but not for all other brands.
i've asked the Conti rep last April at VIR and he said they get better life if kept on a low temp after sessions.

^The guy up at Bogie that owns Pro-6 and used to work for Dunlop also said it's best to keep the warmers on low between sessions, and if it's warm out, just put them on without power to keep the tires insulated.

Dunlop guy in the midwest who is also part of the AMA fitting crew said he uses them to save heat cycles and prevent cold tearing and he's cheap so he wants max life out of his tires.

Yes cold tearing is one of the main reasons he gave to use them.

Also, what would you guys recommend for presures for the Q2's? Just picked up a pair and it will be my first time using Dunlop.

Tire warmers and to prevent cold tearing was a line that he sold and you bought. The only way to pvevent cold and hot tearing is by the right tire pressures on the track.

I've never had an issue with cold tearing. This usually comes into play later in the day when the heat of the day rolls in with plenty of sunshine the tire pressure builds up. I check mine immediately right of the track for every session.

Smutty, is that was MTAG recommends?

Who knows the Dunlop numbers? Are the UK NTEC different from the 2011 US NTEC or 2012 US NTEC?

Yes, that is what MTAG recommended. Last weekend was very warm so I was running 4ish PSI under that off the warmers to get those pressures on track.
