It is gonna be cold the first few sessions on Monday- Unless you have warmers I would stay away from slicks.. B016s, 2CTs would be good for you.

Not sure if you were up there for Bomo or TTD in October 2010 but on those colder days there were lots and lots and lots of crashes from people riding too hard on cold tires/pavement. Dont make the same mistake.

Plus, unless you are running 1:20s at NHMS slicks are complete overkill.

    Interesting statement. Can you elaborate?

What's the downside of slicks for a trackday rider doing 1:20's plus?

Wouldnt a dedicated slick only really be required if your lap speed warrant it?

Only downside that I could see to slicks are cost, warm-up times and operating temps... but even then it's not that big of a big deal.

Jackie, I'd probably just run what ya brung.

Slicks actually ended up being cheaper then dots for me because of how long they last. But jackie either pilot pures or continental dots would be fine

    Re: Tires for my sv...

last year i had no issue with my slicks... at the speed i was running... and actually really trusted my slicks... i had one slide... but thats because there was a few wrecks that slowed us down on the track.. and i admit i went a little to hard into turn 4

just get whatever you want. suggest DOT race tires so you can use them on the street too.

And what would be the upside to running slicks? Not being a dick but I'm trying to decide between umpteen dozens of tires for street and track.

The down side's are cost of the tires, the need to change them to go back to street riding, basically unridable in damp conditions, and completely worthless in rain. From what I'm told the rubber compounds now-a-days are pretty much the same between slicks and DOT race tires. And even DOr race tires are not approved for street use, and offer less grip due to operating temperatures and warmup. For trackdays, street tires are the best bet if it's a street bike. Tires are the very last thing on a long long list that hold back people riding the track.

I feel like banging my head against the wall with all the tire discussions. I couldn't feel a difference in tires until I was at 19's and even then it was subtle. I'd put hard cash down that the vast majority of trackday riders couldn't tell what tires are under them, nor how they're performing by feel. But if anyone crashes 'it was the tires'.

That's bullshit! I'm still trying to figure out why my tires are keeping me from breaking into the 1:45's , maybe I need warmers and a suspension upgrade.

I am aware that you're female, so you'll make the assumption, but no everything is not about you.

Depends if it has the extra power associated with a 520 conversion.
