Track Bike Price

    Track Bike Price

    Hey guys,

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right section but hopefully I am. Ok to the point, I just sold one of my bikes and was thinking of getting a track day bike that could be turned into a race bike. I have found a 2006 kawi 636 with 6k on it for 4500. I am sure that I could sell the fairings and headlight set up and pay for some track plastics and other goodies. But I need some insight, "Am I out of my mind to buy a bike just for the track?" I have a Duc 848 that would be great but I just don't want to toss that at the track. An I was thinking that I might do a couple race weekends to. I just need a little reinsurance that I am not too crazy. Any advice would be great guy and gals.

    Thanks everyone

    You are not crazy.

BUT, there is a great 636 for sale here on the boards fully worked for the track (suspension, bodywork etc) that needs nothing. PM denno

Listen to Manny. MUCH cheaper/easier to buy a bike that's already been built for the track.

Buy a bike that's already set up or on its way to being set up.

here. same bike. same price. ready to go. LOTS of extras that would cost you thousands to compile. (ex:wheels, rearsets, clip ons) buy it, be done, be ready and be happy.

Yeah I saw that denno's bike was for sale. An no doubt that bike kicks ass. I found a 636 for sale in NH that was setup for the track but sold before I could sell my bike. But I do enjoy working on my bikes too and its nice to know what is going into the bike you are riding. I just want to make sure that I am going to be turning the right bike into a track weapon. An that I am not crazy for doing it. Thanks guys for the advice guys keep it coming!!!

I hear that. I am the same way. BUT, dollar for dollar you cannot set it up yourself except for double the cost.

    Its worth it.

Most all of the race bikes on this forum have a known history by at least one other forum member....FWIW.

Thing is, with the amount of money you're considering spending on a streetbike and subsequent track conversion you could very well end up with a super solid race machine along with a decent collection of spares. The purchase of a streetbike to be converted is not going to offer anything like that.....least not from what I've seen.

I hate to admit that Manny's right...but he's right. I know from experience taking a slightly used gixxah 600 and setting it up to race. It cost me a lot of money...I got a fantastic bike with an amazing setup...but, I could have had the same or similar quality for a lot less if I had just gone with a setup bike. When I did my bike (thanks to Degs for the race prep and Kates for suspension), there were not many bikes around. That's different now. You should talk to denno if his bike is still available. It's a great bike for the money.

    Re: Track Bike Price

Shane, I just bought an hawk GT for a track/race bike from Doc. Solid bike, with some spares for a really fair price. Plus he's helping me get to know it, showing me how to wrench on it etc...

EX's and 650's would probably be the way to go to start with. Something I heard about the 600 classes being a "meat grinder", meaning that they will chew you up and spit you out. Tires last longer, parts are easy to come by. I would guess (because I haven't had track time with it) that learning curve will be "gentler" with a 500 or 650.

If you make it up to another bike night, find me and I'll chat with you, introduce you to doc again and some other guys that race from the area and i'm sure we/they will get you pointed in the right direction.

Having ridden in that class, I found these statements to be erroneous. The MW class this year isn't bad and most people who have something to say about the "meat grinder" class don't ride in MW.

    Don't believe the hype.

    Whoops!

    Let me clear this up:

When I said "these statements" I meant "any and all statements regarding the MW class".

I wasn't trying to take away from what you said, rather, it was more for whomever gave you that (mis)information. I can nearly guarantee that the person who said this does not currently ride in the middleweight class but, instead, takes something that was said 10 years ago and offers that as information to anyone asking about middleweights.

My apologies to you. I come in peace.

    Re: Track Bike Price

Seriously, buy Denno's bike. I built my bike from the ground up, it was my first bike, a great street bike, did some track days, now I race it. It is fiscally retarded to do that.

a little history, the bike was Mike Martire's, suspension guru, before Dennis had it. I've ridden it and it's fucking SET UP. Stable as all hell.

I known when 100 people tell you to do something a lot of times the stubborn reaction is to not... but you should get that bike.

It was PRACTICE... and I was hit by some guy on a MWSB!!

Guys who WIN in MWSB don't see it as a meat grinder because they never have to be in the pack.

No worries. I'm mature enough to understand that there are people with lots of experience in racing out there and I know that I'm not one of them. I appreciate the input though, shows some light on a subject that I knew nothing about.
