So, sanity check. A full aftermarket exhaust is lighter, costs around $700. As I understand it, because the FI system is pretty dumb, the bike will them run lean. So to take advantage of the exhaust, you need a Power Commander and maybe a custom tune.

So I'd be spending $1,000 or more for a loss of 8-10 lbs and a gain of 5-10hp. Does that make sense? I'm thinking I can lose 15 lbs for less than that.

If it's track only, there's a LOT of weight to be lost.

I dunno what you've already done to the thing, but keep in mind your priorities. In my opinion it goes:

    1 Tires
    2 Suspension
    3 Brakes
    4 Weight
    5 Motor

    But above all...... Rider.

I am keeping it street legal and got in three track days last season. So far the changes I've made are:

Gel seat to give me a little more leg room - cheap, easy, big help!
Pirelli Diablo Rosso tires from Duncan Moto
Springs, emulator and Penske shock from GMD
SS brake lines, new pads and brake fluid from Duncan Moto
    Evotech tail eliminator

The biggest upgrade (I hope) is that I signed up for the two day California SuperBike School course at Thunderbolt in May. This is the comprehensive course, ridden on their BMW S1000RR's (set in rain mode). It's expensive*, but to my mind, it was a better investment than spending a bunch on the exhaust and tune. Because I'd never use all that power. Just wanted to be sure my priorities were aimed OK.

The S came with rearsets, with rubber covered pegs. One suggestion from Tony was to replace the pegs with something grippier, or at least make some saw cuts in the pads. Are there replacement pegs?

Why do so many people replace the OEM levers? Top quality levers are expensive, and I'm not sure what the benefit is.

    * If and when any of you meet my wife, you are to make reference only to the "Safety training" course I am taking. And you are to imply that it is sheer drudgery, done for the children....

Replacement pegs can likely be found on eBay.

Aftermarket levers are just for bling. Lotta money for something that makes hardly any noticeable difference at all. Just buy a couple of 10-15 dollar OEM replacement levers and call it a day.

Just read through this thread! Interesting diary of your Journey Dana! I may have missed it, but the thing I did that made the biggest difference was wheels. Betcha Pete or Brian could point you to some good choices...

'Saftey Training' course, while sheer drudgery, is a great idea. Your kids are fortunate to have such a wonderful dad! Would love to do that myself someday!

Actually considering Aaron Stevens 'Corner Spin' class at VIR fo some dirt experience!

(Could be that you already have good wheels...in which case, disregard above!)

Well, if there's no plans to race the thing in LWSS, you can go with a GSXR front end with GSXR wheels, front & rear. Not sure they're all that much lighter than stock though, but I know the GSXR rear is wider, allowing for a 180.

    Oxx?

^ I have the same boots, they don't crash well FWIW. No damage to my foot in a lowside, but burnt through the stiching and zipper pretty quick. They also get chewed up pretty quick if you use something like a Woodcraft peg. I also find a harder sole allows me to move around easier. I'm not saying you need to run out and buy new boots, just how things worked out for me with the Daytonas.

I'm planning to buy Sidi Mega Vertigos for next season. Not many boots available in EE width: RoadStars were one.

Re: Track bikes for large humans?

Well, after all that, I may be done.

Have some damage to my left knee that restricts some of the range of motion. As a result, even with the tall seat, I can't comfortably put the ball of my foot on the foot peg without pain.

Going to ride it for a week or two on the street and see if it gets any better, but it's not looking good.

Appears if I want to ride regularly on the track, I'm going to have to look at Plan B, which was to take a DL1000 V-Strom, upgrade the brakes and strip off some of the bodywork.

Have you tried the Suzuki Bandit? I'm 6'2" and I love mine, it's probably one of the most comfortable sportbikes I've ever ridden.

    Wanna trade? :

Sorry about the knee. Maybe a Tard would be a good bet? The seat peg relationship is much easier on the knees.

I've been leafing through the Motorcycle Ergonomics website to see what might work. The 07+ Bandit 1250S's seem pretty well-regarded, so that's a possibility if indeed the SV is out.

I hate to spam you, but I have the Falco up for sale. In the legs, it's comfortable, just a little aggressive up top, not true sport bike aggressive though. I doubt you'd have to do much to make it track ready (and they come standard with a lap timer system). Again, sorry, don't mean to take advantage, but it might be a bike to fit your needs.

If you look at cycle-ergo.com you'll see it's about the same size and has about the same riding position as a stock SV650S.

Actually a very cool site as you can add seat height or change bar geometry and see what the impact is. You can also see why large humans like V-Stroms and other adv bikes....

I ran the Falco against my new bike, 24 deg vs 2 in the upper body. No wonder if feels more comfy. Again, thanks for the link to the site.
