Track Day question

  1. #26

    Re: Track Day question

Just to throw out another option...

We worked a deal with Kobe Leathers and they are throwing in a pair of gloves (and sometimes a back protector) with the purchase of the leathers.

All for under $500! On top of that, they donate a set that we give away to a lucky TTD rider.

    More details are here...

    http://www.tonystrackdays.com/catego...e-leathers.htm

As for helmets, at TTD we're just looking for a decent helmet in excellent condition. We're not real picky on age, but like to see under 7 years or so. As for boots, just be sure they are motorcycle specific and cover the calf area.

with the helmets, i know a new one is needed. I will try some out. I like the advise about wind screens but , i guess the question should be, what will a track not except? Certian brands, material and ratings to look for. Thanks. Do not want to buy a new helmet, feel all good, then the track says NO. That would suck..... I really want this

anywhere in Boston that carry's alot of choices?
Personally I would buy new gloves if they have any sort of bad wear or holes. I wear the previous version of these and have raced and been down in them multiple times.. They have held up great and offer great protection, while being much cheaper than other brands. I will be buying a set for this year.
    http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=8273

The Shoei X-12 that you mentioned is the helmet that I will be picking up for this year. I would go with a solid helmet without a graphics for a cheaper price.

    Re: Track Day question

    Jeff,

Don't mess around with the gloves. Not worth the risk at all, IMO.

Regarding helmets and trackdays, the track itself does not inspect helmets and so long as your lid falls within the requirements of the trackday organization you are riding with you will be all set.

I have an extra back protector you can use so don't sweat that part.

As with anything, there are small variances between trackday companies with regards to bike prep and/ or rider requirements. One thing that is common with all of the trackday companies is that they are going to do the very best they can in order to have you make it to the end of the day with a smile.

Hole in gloves = not a good thing. I'd say most of the time your hands hit the deck in a fall.

If you don't go with the KOBE suit the gloves can be had for $90. I'm on my second pair. I like em a lot.

I bought a pair for my wife, and with this new deal there are always several suits floating around our trackdays so you can check out the quality for yourself.

For the price, I think it's a great suit... especially if you get gloves/back protector thrown in!

I have the same helmet. Bought it at Seacoast when they were doing the $100 rebate. It's a major upgrade from my old Scorpion. Comfy, great peripheral view and light as hell.

Contact Dana @ Riverside in Somerville. Tell her you know me from NESR and she should be able to take care of you on the pricing. I know when I worked there I had it setup to give NESR guys a discount but it's been awhile so I'm not sure if she has that setup anymore or not.

This is another instance where it varies based on organization, not necessarily track. TTD does not require everything to be safety wired; only that a secondary means of securing the oil filter be installed. Check it!

It varries from organization to organization, but most orgs require little to no wiring. Usually you're looking at Oil Filter and/or Oil Drain Bolt at most.

    Re: Track Day question

I know I am asking a lot of questions, but my wife is cool enough to let me do these things with out to much hassle she knows riding keeps me normal. I have done tons of riding, very lucky to ride some of the best roads in the East cost but Track is new and exciting.

but in return I have to give her an estimate so there is no SURPRISE factor at the end.... I use to do the O YA I forgot??? never went over well.....

Truthfully, I am not nervous about it. I use to go to Drag nights on the "run what you brung" nights in FL when I was young. And grew up around cars and racetracks with my bro when I was a kid. I feel comfy at a track.

Mentally feel pretty cool just all the requirements that I am not sure about. Think I am a fair rider, mabey a little of a risk taker, but think my knowlege is OK.
Feel like if this is a book, I now the start and finish, but missing some important info in the middle. If that makes sense?
I am sure I will be many times better after a ride, just need to do IT..

    What else are we missing?

    Gear! check
    Safety wire! check
Food, gas, tools stands etc! check

My truck can roll it up in the back. DO THE TRACKS HAVE AN area to unload from a bed or do I need ramps?

O ya, Lodging! can I camp in my tent so i dont spend anymore money. Cause I still need tires.. LOL

Don't worry about it. I'm sure someone will let you use their ramps.

There is plenty of soft ground for staking a tent down.

Quoting from the TTD site (URL is http://www.tonystrackdays.com/catego...speedway.htm):

"IMPORTANT CHANGE: You no longer have to wait outside the track in the morning. We purchase security starting the night before day one, so you can enter the track anytime after 6PM. Many riders will arrive the night before, unload their bikes, go through tech, etc.

CAMPING: Camping is allowed the night before at all of our NH trackdays. There is no charge and there are showers and electricity available.

FOOD: The restaurant at the track is open for breakfast, coffee, etc. and it is delicious. It is not open for LUNCH, but we do an awesome Lunch Buffet which you can purchase for $15 per person.

If you arrive the morning of the trackday, you can get in any time you arrive, so please be there by 7AM."

Again, depends on the organization. Some require the camera to be hard-tethered to the bike somehow. (usually zip-tie or safety wire)

    Re: Track Day question

I wouldn't sweat the camera thing yet. Concentrate on getting the basics all lined up & taken care of

But since you already have them, some sort of mounting solution that involves a fail-safe back-up in which it will not dangle should the primary mount fail. In other words, safety wire or zip ties that keeps it relatively in place if the mount gives way and doesn't let it interfere with operation of the bike in any way.

On the wrong side of the equation I was talking to a guy who has done 1/2 a trackday and he is building a modern 600 for street and track and setting it up with a quick shifter and race throttle. I guess to each his own but in my humble and very novice track day experience nothing feels as confidence inspiring as a new set of tires.

I have a Frank Thomas 2 piece from about 2 years ago. It's crap compared to my Vanson. I bring it as a spare but I would be leery to have to put it on.

You can get a brand new Shoei RF1100 for about 400.

My Kobe Gloves lasted 2 crashes and died. I will probably get another pair before next season and they are only about 100. They run about a size larger than A*. I don't know about the suits though.
