    Track day tires?

I'm looking to switch from my pilot powers to maybe some Pilot Pures, bt016s or bt003s. I'm looking for something that doesnt require tire warmers.. I've ran just Pilot powers on my last two track days and did fine on them.. Did a lil bit of sliding around my last track day but was more than likely from tire pressure and the how hot it was that day.

    Any one got any advice?

My buddy Ozzy has a set of Michelin Power Ones used only 2 trackdays. His set probably has 80% life left on them. I mean when I saw them in his garage i told him why he did not tell me about them prior to me purchasing my BT003. Let me know if you want them and I'll pass it along to Ozzy.

BTW, the 003RS definitely do not require warmers but I'm running the 003PRO w/out warmers and they work just fine w/out them. Pilot Pures and BT016 are street high performance street tires.

    Re: Track day tires?

I run slicks on a track day W/out T-warmers. Just give em (All depending on temp of the day) 2-3-4 laps.

I also check my tire Pressures after each session to make sure the are set optimally right off the track. This ensures they are good for the next session. In the begining of the session the stearing may be heavy but after the they warm up they are spot on.

I just got done with a set of BT003RS and was not thrilled with the life. The front only held up for 2 dry and 1 wet track days and was toast. The hind tire lasted another day. This is on my ultra high powered Stock SV650

I won't be buying them again.

    Re: Track day tires?

No real advice on specific tire models... but like Gino said, there really isn't a ton of need for tire warmers at a TD. With 20min sessions you have plenty of time to take a couple laps to warm up your tires before pushing them. I typically use warmers, but its just my routine at the track... they certainly aren't required (and I run Dunlop Ntechs).

Like Gino & Ryan, I personally don't think ANY tire really "requires" warmers.

Yes, warmers help tires get up to temp BEFORE you go out on track... but if you progressively work your way up to your normal pace over the first few laps to get your mind, body, tires & suspension up to temp like you probably should each session anyway, just about any tire will be good to go after two or three laps.

Regarding make & models, there's a ton of good options out there from any brand, but I've always liked Pirelli. They make a pretty good variety of street/track day oriented tires and they're readily available to me at the track.
If I were in the market, I'd check out the Diablo Rossa Corsa. I've heard a lot of good feedback.

Not sure how much he wants. Which 003s are you getting? 003RS or 003Pros? Either way 220 is pretty good.

    Re: Track day tires?

i run conti dot's and love them for track days. my last set lasted 7 track days and 2500 street miles. I did use the Bt-002 last year and loved it will be trying the new R-10 whenever i can afford a set. Go with the Bt-003 just make sure the pressures are correct

Never used warmers just use the gas and brakes to warm them up for a lap or 2. If its really hot out that doesn't take long

Indeed! In racing you only have 3/4ths of a lap to warm-up. At track days, I actually think of those first few laps as a luxury. Even when I'm not working and am just riding for fun, I still go out there and slowly work up to normal pace.

you dont NEED tire warmers. i ran dunlop 209's for a few days before i bought tire warmers. just make sure you give them a solid 2 laps to heat up. even with warmers it is good to give your tires a warmup lap or two.

    Re: Track day tires?

Might be too late, but I was going to recommend using whatever tire brand is readily available at the trackdays you attend.

All of the manufacturers have something that works just fine for all levels of riders, and roughly in the same $$ range.

Using the brand that is available just makes it easy to get replacements and correct advice regarding pressures, etc.

Sometimes I kinda like it when I forget to turn my warmers on. Those first couple laps can teach you a lot about lack of grip, what incorrect pressure feels like, sliding... you just gotta be careful and not push them to the point of disaster.

    Re: Track day tires?

Yes, I'm a Dunlop guy, but the new Q2's are a really good tire. The heat up much quicker than race rubber but have almost the same grip. On a LW bike Jeff & I rode back to back on Q2's and 211GP's and there was only a very small difference in lap times. I would put them on any track day bike I had without thinking twice.

    Re: Track day tires?

I ended up running the BT003rs for my track day. They worked out very well. I did a lot less slipping and sliding than my Pilot Powers but they are a stickier compound, as well as dual compound while the the Pilot Powers are single compound. I didnt feel like the bike was as easy to flick back and forth as when I run the Michellins.
