Track Plastics Or Keep It Stock For Track Days?

For the guys who track there street bike how many of you bought track plastics for your first TD?

I plan on doing 3 to 5 TDs this year would it be worth it to me to take some money from suspension and invest in plastics?

Nothings required of a normal street bike for track days. If you feel the need to do suspension, do that, and look for a rashed up set of racebodywork. If youre eventually gonna do a ton of track days, bodywork probably isnt a bad idea.

If you're worried that you'll end up throwing your bike down the track, try to find some pre-rashed OEM bodywork on eBay.

If you're going Pete's route I have a slightly rashed right side panel in yellow that I'd let go cheap

    Not to stir the pot,

But....how much are you looking at for suspension? 1000? 1500? Lets say 1500...add another 500 or so for bodywork and crap....2K..maybe you want a steering stabalizer..2500..for 5 track days this year, more in the future I'd be looking at a track only bike.

    ding ding ding!
Exactly what I went through this winter. Was going to spend a bunch of $$ to get the triumph track ready. When I priced it all out, it was only going to cost me a tad more to get a dedicated track bike.
One more thing to consider, can you deal with seeing the triumph cartwheel down the track? I know I couldn't with mine.

    As well,

stockers are fine if you don't crash, but if you crash you would be best having track plastics on.

I just picked some up for my 998. Honestly I will most likely get frame sliders, get the bodywork painted and just leave them on. Keep the stock plastics in storage just in case.

if you're anything like me you wont care if your plastics get messed up after a track day, because all you can think about is going back to the track.

Re: Track Plastics Or Keep It Stock For Track Days?

Your 675 needs nothing for suspension except to have someone help you set it up. Trust me. I did slow amateur race times on bone stock 636 suspension, and could have pushed harder without much trouble from the bike.

As far as bodywork goes, it's nice to know that your pristine stock plastic is tucked away in bubblewrap, but I have chosen to run the last three seasons with the stockers. No crashing= perfect bodywork to this day.

This season, I decided to buy a cheap streetbike and put race glass on the ZX. The price for the bodywork was right (thanks Steve) and I was racking up too many street miles on the bike that is best dedicated to doing my TTD job.

Re: Track Plastics Or Keep It Stock For Track Days?

First off thank you for all your help

What got me thinking was a set of race plastics for 380 shipped with some minor rash on t675.net My stockers are perfect and to be honest i dont want to ruin them. I dont plan on crashing of course BUT shit does happen

I was thinking of getting either just a spring or a rear penske shock depending on funds. Word is the stocker is over sprung so alot of people change out the rear shock. I have been saving all year since i went to a race last summer :-) But have already spent 1500 on gear so i have to be smart.

I already have a gpr stabilizer

if your focus is more on not wanting to rash up your stocks... then i say get the track ones. from what i see from younger trackies... you ride more confidently with something you don't give a rats ass about.

Re: Track Plastics Or Keep It Stock For Track Days?

Guess I'll give another point of view.
I've been going with stock plastics for several years now.

I dont know you as a rider but I'd say unless you plan on really
pushing your limits right away I'd say your going to be pretty safe
riding your OEM stuff and not have too many worries about going down.

Plus with frame sliders if you have a simple low side you most
likely just rash your bar ends and sliders.

Lots of people have plenty of fun at track days with full stock
stuff and live to tell about it later !

Race bodywork is insurance. You probably won't need it, but you may. Neither Tony, not I have had race bodywork on our bikes for the last several track day seasons. I'm only changing mine this year because I have the bodywork sitting around and because I bought a street bike that allows the ZX to become a track bike.

I think its important to point out that both you and Tony are seasoned vetrans. Unfortunately, its a lot more likely for a newer track rider to crash at a track day than a person with 20 years experience.

I am planning on getting track bodywork just for the piece of mind I AM NOT a aggressive rider, you will not be seeing me tearing it up on the 26th

Now the 27th might be different hahahaha

    Dan,

on the 675 specifically you could run a set of rashed up OEM bodywork minus the headlights and tail for cheap. they are available for cheap with some haggling.

it takes less than 15mins to change it all. Zipties can be used in a lot of places on the "track" body panels.

    my opinion

Re: Track Plastics Or Keep It Stock For Track Days?

I agree that there is a difference. But, consider that Tony and I ride many more track miles and are often pushing closer to the limits of the tires and bike than a new rider would. That said, we rarely push hard enough to risk crashing and we do know what we're doing, so you're probably right.

I have a Yellow tail that's cracked, but usable. You might need to throw some gorilla tape on the underside, but if you want it, let me know and it's yours.
