    First trackday

    Any advice?

    I'm doing my first trackday on the 29th with a bike i've never really ridden. I didn't want to track my Triumph so I bought a GSXR750. Its a track only bike, so the only street riding I've done is around my neighborhood to make sure she is functioning correctly.

    Its making me a bit nervous to be doing my first day on a new to me bike.
    I think I'd feel more at home on my Speed Triple. However I really don't want to track it. Thats what I have the GSXR for.

    What do you track vets think?

    Re: First trackday

    I think that your worrying too much.

    The first time you get out on the track you will be going less than street speeds. You will have about 6-8 laps where you are following the leader and more than enough time for someone with your riding experience to get the feel of the new bike.

    You'll have a great time Nate. Use second gear through the entire track to get to know the line, that way you don't have to concentrate on the bike so much. The 750 should be powerful enough to do that.

    Re: First trackday

    +1 to what's been said.

    The 29th will be spent learning the new bike & learning the track & track day environment... as much as you'll want to do otherwise, DON'T push yourself out on the track (ESPECIALLY in the morning), just spend the whole day learning & getting a feel for everything. By the afternoon you'll begin settling in and having more & more fun

    Unfortunately I'll be instructing the blue group, otherwise I'd keep an eye out for ya & give ya some 1 on 1 time up there.

    If you get to the track early feel free to hunt me down & we can shoot the shit about things

    Re: First trackday

    I did my first trackday on a new bike as well. Exactly what Pete said, the morning will be getting to know the bike and getting comfortable with the track and it'll start getting real fun in the afternoon. I didn't push myself at all but felt more confident and a little faster by the end of the day anyways (at least I was getting passed less! lol)

    Just take it easy, listen to the instructors and don't be afraid to ask for a little time to follow an instructor around for a few laps (I didn't and wish I did).

    The track is just a paved piece of land. It's the same as any other road without surprises, cars, or cops and with instructors, corner workers and medical crews.

    Re: First trackday

    i almost puked into my helmet on my first track day. seriously! Mike had just made a joke in the class that "try to have fun and don't go throwing up behind your truck" ha ha ha= very funny, right!? And there i was thinking why the hell did i sign up for this! Your kidding me, right- I ain't riding my bike this close to any curb not even the apex, or the bowl was a carousel itself and got me disoriented and dizzy! and how many times did i end up on sand on T3- that turn is for nuts! Turn 11-12- this cannot be for real! LOL
    But I will never forget the day I became an addict..... you will be fine, it is all good, all fun, and all the worries are left behind the gates!

    Re: First trackday

    I had little track experiance before bringing the track only R6 this april in the pouring rain. I was a little nervous about being out there on a bike I've not ridden more then up and down the street a few times.

    But as already said. You'll be taking in so much information that your speeds will be down and all will be well. I found the follow the leader session a great help in getting over the "new bike worries" in my head as well.

    Re: First trackday

    if you do more track days you will probably find that you are nervous at the start of everyone whether it is a new bike or not. Then after a few warmup laps, you'll be having to much fun to be nervous anymore.

    That's great that we're going to have so many new track riders.

    We all remember our first time... that's why we make it as painless as possible.

    Just do as your told and all will go smooth.

    Be an independent, rebel type of rider... and you'll probably get to meet the cornerworkers and ambulance staff up close and personal.

    errr.... I was referring more to things like:

    stay in line during follow the leader;

    warm up your tires for a full lap each session;

    look through the corners

    Fact you are doing the track for the first time will make it easier IMO to get used to a new bike. Everything will be 'new' so your body/mind won't really notice the new bike as much, as it will be busy processing the entire package.

    Yeah, that makes sense. I think the bike will become second nature, as I'm paying more and more attention to the flow of the track.

    Re: First trackday

    Just take it easy at first. You already know how to ride at a decent pace. Getting used to a different bike shouldnt be that big of a deal. First ride on my Yamaha was on the track and in the rain. After the follow the leader session which is very slow youll be ready to go and feel a lot less nervous
