Tracking My FZR600 Next Season

    Tracking My FZR600 Next Season

Alright so I have a nice little old '97 FZR600 that I'm looking forward to taking to a track day this year. So here are my winter plans to prepare her for the track:

-Battlax BT-014 150/60/18 rear tire with a S20 Hypersport front (will different compounds cause trouble on the track?)
    -Engine Ice coolant
-Safety wire coolant filler/drain, oil fill/drain, oil filter
-Safety wire exhaust just in case
    -Clear wind screen
-Is it worth doing steel braided brake lines?

It has 350 miles on the chain and sprockets, so that should be all set. Everything else is in working order, but I'll go over the bike with a torque wrench just to make sure everything is straight.

As far as gear is concerned here's what I have:

-Joe Rocket 1pc suit, elbow pads, and shoulder pads. I need a back protector (a better one than I have), knee protectors, and knee pucks.
    -HJG FG-17 helmet
    -Cortech gauntlet leather gloves
    -Vega full length boots
    -Rear Stand
-Purchasing front head lift stand this spring

As you can see I did this on a budget. The helmet is brand new, everything else is lightly used but in excellent shape with no rips, tears or wear.

What else am I forgetting? I should probably bring one of those nice VP gas cans with the long spigot. I know everyone suggests water, snacks, and a chair to sit in. If anyone else can think of anything I need to buy over the winter that would be awesome! Otherwise I'm pretty excited to go to my first track day.

You don't need a front stand. Just the rear stand will keep your bike upright. Unless you're thinking warmers...and you don't need those either.
Sounds like you're getting there. Sunscreen, tire pressure gauge, maybe some beers for roaming around the night before (but not too much), tools, and if you have spare wheels with rains: BRING THEM EVERY TIME. That's more of a karma thing. A peace offering to the gods, if you will.

Is there a particular reason you are safety wiring stuff? You aren't required to for most trackday organizations. Same goes for coolant, but you are doing the right thing to switch it.

Make sure you have enough slack in your chain that the chain tension will not restrict the rear suspension from compressing fully. The chain is tightest under full compression of the rear suspension.

You should generally run a lower tire pressure at the track relative to the street. I wont make a specific recommendation for you but I will say that I got made fun of for running my street pressure of 33/36 and now use 30/30 on my SV with Q2s.

Bring extra tie downs. If you suffer from a lack of restraint and are worried about crashing on day 1, consider bringing spare levers so you can get back on quickly. On a similar note, get frame sliders if you dont already have them.

I thought its better safe than sorry when it comes to safety wiring stuff. Also its very tough to find rain tires or just tires period because of the 18" rear wheel. Also another thing that sucks about having an old bike is that there are no frame sliders for it.

No frame sliders for that bike because they will tweak the frame. The frames on the fzrs dent tweak relatively easily. Have fun though. I think I still have a box of random odds and ends from mine your welcome to them if there's anything useful.

Yes. Braided brake lines are with it. As well as new pads and fresh brake fluid is a must.

Do you have a 17" rear wheel conversion? I would buy it off you if you do.

Call Speedwerks in Deleware, he's got a 17" kit worked out that actually drops some weight at the same time.

Thanks for the heads up. I sent him an e-mail just to see what the pricing was like on it.

I just picked up a BT-014 rear because it was one of the last ones left that wasn't ridiculously priced. I love the bike, but the lack of good tire options makes it a nightmare.

2000 YZF swingarm will get you a 17" wheel, can also put the YZF front end on too. had both of those options on my '90 FZR600 and it was great!!! btw i think i have a side fairings from the 90 tucked away somewhere if you want em. they may be a bit banged up but not too bad iirc.

For Loudon I wouldn't make that swap, it increases your wheelbase.

    Good running condition
    Good tires
    Good suspension
    Good brakes

Don't sweat the rest. Save your bucks.

Safety wiring is a pain in the ass. So long as all your nuts & bolts have decent threads and are torqued properly then I wouldn't worry about it.

A nice chair, maybe a few basic tools, snacks, lunch, fluids and you're golden. If you're just doing ONE day, a full gas tank would probably be enough.

Yep, each time I came, I ran all the sessions and never emptied a full tank

The bike has newer EBC pads, the suspension is good (has a little surface rust on the preload adjustment nut, I'm not sure if that matters), and it's getting a brand new S20 in the front and a brand new BT-014 in the rear.

Does TTD require any safety wiring for track days (at NHMS specifically)?

The only safety wiring is on external oil filters to hold them tight.
