Trackday Tire Question - Last Year's Q3 Front with a New Q3+ Rear

Here is the thing: My Dunlop 3s have 6 trackdays on them. So I went out and bought a new Q3 plus rear which I bought and fit on the bike today. I am thinking about keeping the front which has 6 trackdays and looks to have nearly 70% of life. The issue is there the tires sat outside during the winter. I do want to run blue group this year and thought about getting a set of slicks. I am thinking run the new Q3plus rear and last years Q3 front for the first trackdays and see how it goes. Smart or bad move? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Eddie

BTW...let me know if anybody wants a free takeoff Q3. Might have 65% + life in the middle. Can't vouch for the sides though.

Normally I would think you would be ok running last years front. But the issue is that they sat outside in the cold bellow freezing. Check for cold cracking. When In doubt replace with new!

Duly noted. No cracking observed. I'll keep an eye on that front coming back into that first TD. I appreciate it.

Re: Winter tire question - Q3

Really? All new from sitting over the winter? I assumed a q3 wouldn't have so much trouble in the cold, I guess I don't know a lot about tires though. Mine still have a lot of life in them. Are they still suitable for the street? My street bike rear is pretty shot so I guess I could swap my q3s onto that if they're no good for the track now and just get new tires for the track bike.. pls advise

this is directly from the Dunlop site> "How do I store my tires over the winter and will they be ok?

"Over the winter, your tires should be stored in a place where temperatures are above 38 degrees. DO NOT store them next to electric motors or near chemicals like fertilizer. They produce ozone and will deteriorate the tire."
Also they send a warning if you get tires shipped that asks you not to let them freeze and to check for cold cracking. Race tires are different animals then street tires, Q3s are street race tires and may or may not be effected by the cold in the same way. I would ask Dunlop what they think and recommend.

Jake LaForge raced on cracked dunlops and won...

I've rode on cracked dunlops at track days and they were fine.

We are all risk takers here some more then others. But I would say that Dunlop would not recommend your choice to anyone. But I could be wrong?

Watch Jake race full supermoto in the rain some time. The guy has absolute confidence in his bike and tires at all times even on a muddy swamp of a track. It's amazing to see. You could give him square shaped teflon wheels and he'd still come out in front.

Looks okay to me. You can have the rear if you want it. The front is in similar condition. I'll keep the front for now. Available to be picked up in Framingham. Cheers
