Re: Palmer, May 27 and 28 Trackdays

Well, that was kinda of a bizarre weather pattern, but a lot of laps were turned in mostly dry conditions, and the event definitely ended on a high note with some warm, almost sunny sessions Monday afternoon. I had 2 great 1 on 1 students who both made some really nice progress. That's always rewarding.

In the last session of the day, I finally tested out the CW direction at speed. The only odd limitation I found was the T5 braking zone. Any time I tried to push the pace there, the back end would lift and try to pass the front. Some of the instructors reported that the leg dangle *gasp* was effective at stabilizing the rear end as was scooting back in the seat.

I didn't have time to test the dangle. My solution was earlier braking and just not trying to make any gains in that area, but to focus on the exit of 5 into 4 and lining up for an early acceleration into 3. My last lap was very close to my best CCW time, but consider that there is no chicane going clockwise. I think the T5 penalty is offset by the lack of chicane making for a pretty similar potential.

In any case, the track is really fun in both directions. I think my favorite part CW might be the end of the straight, banging a downshift and drifting the tail at 140mph. Wooohooo! What was your favorite section?

I struggled with the new bike in the CW direction. There were several places where "dips" in the pavement upset my bike (that I didn't feel in the CCW direction). I don't recall this problem last year, but not sure if my other bike had better suspension, or the dips are new this year.

Where? I notice a bit more of a bump at the crest of the T12 chicane, the T1 bump on the wide pavement seems bigger. Are you still on stock suspension? I'd say for sure the GMD stuff on you previous bike would be better.

3 places - Turn 12, Turn 10 and Turn 8 to a much lesser degree. Turn 8 and 10 are there in both directions, but didn't seem to upset the bike as much the other direction. Going CCW, you are not hard on the gas going over the Turn 10 thing... you are when going CW.

Turn 8 wasn't too bad, but again - worse going this way.

And I agree that eventually I'll have to do the suspension if I want to be truly happy.

Pretty much same points as you guys. T5 entry was the worst part and I also really didn't like that dip entering T12. The only other item to add is the bumps entering T8.

Favorite part was probably the long right-hander T12-T11...liked the way that opened up and how you could ratchet on the gas thru that section and then out T10.

Re: Palmer, May 27 and 28 Trackdays

My line out of 10 had me just missing the bump altogether, so no issue there. The T8 bump got my attention a few times. To address it, I dragged one finger on the front brake as I crossed that area. Settled it down considerably.

I also really enjoy T11 CW. letting it run out wide, pivoting late, and starting the run at T10 super early. So much fun!

I've learned to do the suspension sooner than later on a new bike. Avoids an extended period of frustration. It often takes a few passes to get it just right, so might as well get started.

To be honest, I haven't done much fiddling with the stock stuff yet. Still working on just getting comfortable with the new leathers and the new seating position.

Definitely the down side of changing everything (bike and leathers and gloves and boots).

Oh well... I'm not looking to set any lap records so I have some time to get things sorted.

Yeah, I hear ya. The new leathers took me a bit longer than expected. Mostly because they are ULTRA slippery on my seat. I think I need to go to a foam covered superbike seat to get a little grip. On the suspension, It makes sense to ride the stock stuff a bit and get up to pace to identify the issues.

Re: Palmer, May 27 and 28 Trackdays

This track was truly an incredible skill builder. I'm happy to report I didn't miss a single session, and particularly enjoyed my private (one other guy on a GSXR joined in) end of day Sunday session in the rain to test out some traction control limits and learn the track in prep for Monday.

Finally starting to avoid braking at the end of the straight and utilizing a downshift, nailing the chicane and leaning way over into T12 was a great way to get amped up to take turn 9 at speed - then standing the bike up and getting hard on the gas (with maybe a tiny accidental dank whoolie) coming out of it was so much fun. Both knees down in several turns by the final warm sessions Monday, man that was rewarding.

Coaches were awesome, amount of peeps on track was great, and this track was something special. Can't wait to make it at an annual pilgrimage, at minimum.

Re: Palmer, May 27 and 28 Trackdays

    Whiskey hill clockwise

First I'll start by saying this is the very first time I have ever ran the same track in the opposite direction ever (aside from London after dark with a beer and a pit bike). I can't believe just how completely different it was riding this way. There was no way I could feel as though I knew this track. It didn't help that the day was cold ,gray ,damp and had the feeling that it could rain heavy any second . Due to that I was riding very tight and took all day to feel comfortable.

Turn 14/1 this is easier to explain later when I'm coming out of turn one. I will just say that after the wall from pit out it was an easy way to pass going in if you were late on the brakes.

    13. Was a quick simple straight curb to curb. Only issue was it is narrow and that day a lot of riders swooping (new track and poor conditions would be my guess for that).

    12. From this point I really liked the way it flowed. You can twist on ,drag a knee while accelerating around.

    11. Just a continuation turn from 12.

    10. This was fun ripping on the gas and pulling hard into 9. I was able to drag-race a lot of liter bikes here, I'm on a 675 triple. I could late brake go deep and late apex while using the banking to help slingshot through. I enjoyed this turn more this way CW that going CCW.

    9. This was my second favorite turn . I could kick the rear out and slide, put my knee down while getting hard on the gas coming out of nine heading into 8

    8. This was difficult at first due to it being blind coming around nine and felt as if would be too narrow with traffic until you get used to where you can run wide. The track has extra Tarmac open up just where you would need it if you were trying to jockey for position with other rides. Put a big smile on my face when the sessions ended talking shit to fellow riders.

    7. Seven ,Six ,Five ,and Four. This was by far the best part of the track for me. Ripping up the hill (if it were dry I could have touched my elbow down here). " That's the story I'm sticking with no matter what you think ".

    6. Flicking right to left full throttle, short shift and wheelie over the hill was killer. Felt like turn five Loudon but better. I was very timid earlier in the day here. I really had to look deep into the turn in order to keep at speed. Looking over at the wall would kill drive.

    5. This was my favorite turn. I love how this was technically challenging and addictive going deep. I am at my best in turns like this. It reminded me of turn 3 Loudon except it was steep downhill. I could slide the rear out while it was in the air. There's a bump mid turn here and it would mess you up if you hit it just right.

    4. I hated this turn until later in the day. It could get ugly if you get it wrong. It's a simple spot to wash out the front or have a big highside especially when damp.

    3. Not a fan of this section. It's very easy to get up to triple digits quick. Just a little mistake and your in big trouble here.

    2. Liked this turn even less than three. Coming up the hill where pit out is for CCW and that cone would just appear close to my tire. This took me half the day day to get used to the cones there.

    1. Not a fan. Don't like the wall so close to my head and blind going onto the fastest section of track. I was never comfortable getting to full speed all the way to 14. The dog leg isn't fun for me. I felt tight and kept drifting to the wall making a tight apex into 14.

All in all I did enjoy this way it's much more technical than CCW but it's also much easier to have a very bad day there. There's more I could go on about but I'll leave it here for now.

Also the group of riders that are regularly at Tonystrackdays are some of the best people. Really fun funny and love to have a good time on a motorcycle. I love being able to do this with everyone. Thanks for having me.

Nice writeup. This is why we call Palmer a great road and not a racetrack. As you pointed out, there are places that the penalty is too high. There's corners I'll go as fast as I can - and corners I'll go as fast as I dare (which you named most of the ones I simply refuse to go full speed).
