    neither...keep shopping

gsxr - inline 4 very very fast...easy to maintain, but more bike then a newb should have

duc - Vtwin fast enough but out of these a better choice for a newb, requires frequent $$ maintainance...unless you have a lot of $$ or are handy I would advise against it

    For your first bike....
Sorry, but both of these bikes would be over your head. Please don't take offense to that, but I'm simply telling it like it is.

First of all, I can pretty much guarantee you that the Ducati will be intimidating for a new rider because of the riding position which places you almost directly over the front wheel. Additionally, it is NOT a forgiving bike, it WILL spit you off if you're not very precise with the throttle and clutch. Also, they are high maintenance (read=$$$$$) I know because I own one.

Second, the GSX-R 750 is very powerful and I would not reccomend for a new rider for a few of the same reasons I mentioned above against the Ducati.

You should be looking at something like an SV-650. This is a great bike that you would not get bored with as your skills improve.

    Just my $.02

Where is the " all of the above" option.

Personally, I like both the GSXR750 and the Duc 748.

Red pretty much summed it up.

What condition are these bikes in? are they salvage title?

4 grand is plenty to find a decent bike but in the end it is up to you..you can kill yourself on a 250...if you are level headed you should be ok and not get hurt... try craigslist...

Mission accomplished, noone is going to have a clue what you're writing. Hopefully your brain is more organized and focused than your internet posting would indicate; otherwise it doesn't matter what bike you buy, you're liable to get distracted by something shiny on the ground and ride off a bridge.

In which case I'd recommend the ducati, you'll look much more stylish riding off a bridge or into a bridge abuttment on one of those. It's been done to death on the GSXR, totally passe.

Vodka martinis are for pussies. Men drink beer or whiskey. Pussy.

And on a more relevant note - this topic has been beaten to death, but I'll throw my two cents in for the newbie - neither of those bikes will stab you, shoot you, or buck you off.

I learned to ride on a Yamaha FJ1200 with a bunch of work done to the motor. It was the world's most awful beginner bike. I'm still alive. As bigred said, as long as you use your head with whatever you end up getting, you'll be fine.

No, a Duc 748 or a GSXR 600 would not be my recommendation for a first bike, but not because you will "kill yourself". I think on something a little bit more manageable, you will learn more about riding a bike, and ready yourself for something quicker in the future.

    Ummm.....it involved an FJ1200?

Just for clarities sake - while all of the douchebags I happened to be riding with that day decided to call me "highsider", I never actually came off the bike.

It was a very valuable lesson I learned that day - dont chop off the throttle while leaned over in corners. Especially on a bike with shitty bias tires on it.

    You'll poke your eye out.

Buy a Ninja 250, 500, or Suzuki GS500 for a first bike...MAYBE a SV650. Race replica 600's and bigger are not good first bikes, even if you take the MSF, which you should take either way. You're going to make a lot of mistakes when learning to ride, and you're better off on a bike more forgiving to those mistakes.

Like chopping off the throttle in mid-turn.

20 beers or 3-4 martinis? Which do you prefer? I challenge anyone to keep up without crapping their pants.

Ever had a boilermaker? Shot of whiskey dropped into a beer and chugged? Don't think I've ever had a more vile concoction in my life. And I like beer and whiskey.
