Buy what you want. I would go with the 748. That is a good price if it has been maintained. The GSXR's are all over the place.

Dont be a fool and get somthing that you could kill yourself on. Don't take offence. Those bikes have way too much power for a new rider. Take a year at least and ride something like this. Plenty of power so you will not be bored! These bikes are great and handle well. Not too mention it's an industructable HONDA !

I hate to see Jon sell this but it is a great bike at the right price!

Well, I got my first bike last week... a ninja 750, I've ridden everyday, about 350 miles total and I'm not dead yet. I honestly think if you can control it and take it really easy you'll be fine, especially on a 748... for that price. I only got a 750 because of a good price. Sometimes the bike you can get isn't exactly the bike you want, but you can't pass on a deal.

Everything is throttle control really. My first MSF class my teacher said, "And with a bike you'll be controlling the throttle really carefully, right? So what CC bike can you ride?" nobody answers, he replies with, "Any."

But my real question is where do you find these smoking deals... or these plentiful scams.

That deal on the ducati is a great deal as long as the proper maintenance has been done and you get all the service records.

If not, then be prepared to shell out a few more bucks.

Buy the Duc... you know you wanna.

as a duc owner now i can't say i'd recommend it to anyone as a first bike.

Remember first bikes are usually ridden alot ( i did with mines anyways ). And the duc is definately NOT a great daily ride, the more miles that go up so the does the cost of maintainence. The ergo's will kill your back, and at low speeds the characteristics of the twin could put you on your ass quickly.

Ok everyone! He's ridden 350 miles, and isn't dead, so I guess that settles it: a 750cc bike is fine for a beginner. As far as the MSF instructor...not sure what to say. I'd think they would try to steer you towards a smaller bike, but I remember mine who seemed to avoid giving bike suggestions. Guess they're not there to give bike suggestions.

Rockstar....stay away from both bikes. It's NOT just throttle control that makes it a bad idea. Compared to something like a Ninja 250, or Ninja 500/Suzuki 500, 600cc+ bikes are a lot more sensitive to mistakes and less forgiving. Yes, people start out on bigger bikes and are fine, then there are plenty of people who either get hurt, or never really enjoy the experience and give up motorcycling. Believe me, you'll have more fun on a bike you can wind out a bit here and there and not shit your pants, vs. riding a rocket with a constant death grip on the bars. The learning curve will be much quicker on a smaller bike. Suck it up for a season, then step up to what you really want.

Maybe we should say "learn for a season" rather than "suck it up."

I'm not too surprised by the amount of people who want to jump on a big bike, rather than start small. It's just like new drivers who want a sports car as their first vehicle.

I guess I'm in a unique position: I'm the only one in my group of friends who wants learn how, so I don't need to worry about 'impressing them' or 'having the smallest bike.' *shrug*

What I would do is buy neither. Either bike is going to be something you can't ride to a significant % of it's potential.

What I WOULD do is come up with a budget. Take at least $700 and put that aside for safety gear - helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, pants, back protector, along with other bike-related crap - tie downs, bike cover, etc.

Then, factor in insurance - what is the total amount that you are able and willing to spend on insurance. This will vary greatly based on the bike and other factors.

Remember that your first bike is not your last bike provided you want to stay with it and manage not to mangle yourself. What if someone who was 16 and just got their license said - hey I am going to buy a 500HP car, it's a good deal what do you think? You'd probably tell them, hmm maybe start out smaller, no? So, don't do the same here.

Find yourself a bike under 80HP that crashes well and has low insurance and operating costs. GS500, SV650, EX500, EX250, etc.

    Good luck

Red is right. There are a few Ducati owners here (myself included) and we can all tell you that these are expensive bikes to maintain. You need to take it to a Ducati dealer every 6,000 miles for a valve clearance check, and it would seem that the valves need to be shimmed every 12,000 miles or so. The valve checks range from roughly $400 to $600. The valve shimming maintenance costs upwards of $1,000.

I also agree with everyone here about the level of bikes you're looking at. These things are way above the head of a beginner.

I can speak specifically about the Ducati when I also agree with a few others about how unforgiving the Ducati is. The ergonomics of their superbikes (i.e. 748, 916, 996, 998, etc) are horrible and as a result, are possibly the most uncomfortable bike ever produced. The seat and pegs are high, bars low and far away from the seat, forcing you to hunch over the tank, and the exhaust is stuffed under the seat which is quite uncomfortable in any ambient temps above 60 degrees.

I also agree with ancosta. Gear, in my opinion, is very important and quite expensive. You'll actually probably need more than the $700 that he suggested. I've $2000 invested in gear and thats just jacket, pants, boots, gloves, and helmet. I still need a good back protector and they cost around $200

I took that quote from a general consensus on the Ducati Monster board, which covers the entire country. I've yet to have my valves done, so I can't speak from personal experience on exact pricing.

Wayne-O should have a really good idea on the cost, since he's probably gone through quite a few valve services by now

Here is one of the many threads on ducatimonster.org where maint costs were discussed

Sorry, I was implying that he's going to buy stuff on closeout over Newenough or similar, and will end up with very baseline gear, nothing you'd bring to track day or wear on a 1000 mile tour through the elements.

    $150 helmet
    $100 boots
    $100 jacket
    $50 gloves
    $150 back protector
    $100 pants
    -------
    $650

$50 tie downs, "copy of proficient motorcycling"
    ------
    $700

    or:

    $1200 vanson 2 pc suit
    $500 arai helmet
    $150 held gloves
    $200 Sidi boots
    $200 Dainese back protector
$700 Aerostitch for rain and cold
$150 cool low cut street boots
    $100 armor jeans
    .... and so on

I agree w/ the above; 5-800 bucks is about right for the bare minimum... and yea, there's just a touch of a difference between bare minimum & high end street/trackday/race apparel

When i started riding I searched for the best bang for the buck... something that would last a long time, be suitable for track use and still usable on the street. I got a 2pc suit for $575 (full suit for track, usually just the jacket for street), a "last years model" helmet for $150 (since been replaced), gloves for $100 and boots for $250. That was 2 & 1/2 years ago & I still use almost all the same stuff about 20 thousand miles later... so i've gotten some pretty good use out of all that equipment. Since then i've spent alot more to gear up for racing... all together i think it's close to 3 grand.

Definitely gotta pay to play, no question about it. The trick is finding how to play while minimizing both the pay AND the risk. It's not just about buying a bike & riding it... there's alot to it that you have to factor into your budget.

Wow, I came into this one late.. How did that happen?

Rockstartyme, (are you foreign? Where are you from?)
You are getting some good advice here, it just doesn't seem you are listening. "I am going to look at the Ducati". Jeesh!

That Ducati deal sounds too good to be true, I wouldn't walk away I would run, sounds like he is trying to dump something on someone wo doesn't know anything. ( I too own a Ducati and know what a 748 is all about)

WE are not trying to be mean, WE just have strong opinions on what a "first bike" SHOULD be.
Sure some people buy bigger bikes for first bikes (I.E. a Ninja ZX-7) BUT does that make it the best and smartest thing to do? Not in our opinion.

I speak for the group so you get the idea that many people have told you to stay away from these bikes, I hope you take that advice.

If not, I wish you luck and godspeed.

BTW, I have a great first bike for sale, only $1200. PM me for details.

What is the difference between these bikes and that F3? On the street, not much they will both go fast enouth to kill you, at least the Duc and the GSXR will stop...
