    anyone ride one of these?

"dual wheel drive at the flip of a lever?"

for some reason, everytime I see a "different" motorcycle (if you can call it that), I want it

I have. Very cool machine. Underpowered, but cool.

2WD and reverse if its a Patrol.

Our next sidecar rig will be a Ural.

The "Two wheel drive" refers to the side car wheel. There is a long shaft (axle) that is engaged to drive the side car wheel. From what I have read, these machines work best around the 45-50 mph zone and are not capable of much more than 65. Probably less with the side car attached.
They certainly do look like fun for the back roads, though.

The sidecar drive drive may be exclusive. But two-wheel drive dirtbikes are nothing new. There were a coupla brothers when I was growing up that had two-wheel drive dirtbikes (a chain also ran to the front wheel)...

Unless your filming a German war movie I don't get it.

Greedy middlemen I have to wonder what a
URAL motorcycle (not 3 wheel) cost in Russia.

I wouldn't be surprised if its around $2000

they are very expensive for the technology the local dealer here gets between $8k-$10k for one depending on model, do you really want to pay that much for 1930's technology, yep, some middleman is making money, maybe its the russian importer that I'm doing work for

I've only been on a short ride.....a friend of mine tried one for a weekend once, no power, fun on gravel roads, as posted tops speed just over 60 with the 2wd model

even though tinkering is easy, your always tinkering and tightening

they have kick start as well as electric

65 mph max speed, like 50 horsepower, it needs PREMIUM gas, and is made in siberia. Aside from being old and busted, unless you desperately want to do some sidecar riding off-road, I cant see buying one of these over a more sleek, fuel efficient, and better looking rig.

I was checking them out at the boston expo center last weekend. If you think a harley is overpriced and undertech, then this must just burn you up.

Re: 1 or 2wd ural patrol

Urals are wicked cool despite their deficiencies. The two-wheel drive works really well and makes the Ural able to get through some pretty amazing stuff offroad and in snow. There's a guy on ADVrider who rode a Ural cross-country and back last year (he actually got factory backing just by contacting them and proposing the ride and accompanying ride report -- they provided him with a brand-new Ural Gear-Up). There's another guy who's about to embark on a trip over the Canadian ice roads to the Arctic Ocean, also on a Ural.

I wish I could afford to get one, because it would be just the thing for winter riding on snowy roads. And it could pretty much replace a car for me because I rarely have to transport anything that couldn't fit in the sidecar.

One mod that some Ural owners do to make it more reliable is swap out the engine with a BMW airhead one. Apparently it's a pretty easy swap. But I've also heard that Ural is very good about listening to customer/dealer feedback and fixing problems from one production run to the next, so apparently the newest bikes are much better than the ones from just five or ten years ago.

Re: 1 or 2wd ural patrol

My uncle actually imports these for Ural and has one himself. I think they are pretty cool bikes, definitely different. I will say that riding in the side-car on one of those things was much more intense (read scary as $hit) than anything I've done on my own bike.

I couldnt tell you what they cost in Russia or to import these days. I know the last time I spoke with him about company and bikes he said there wasnt a huge mark up or anything like that. I dunno.
