    $100 well spent!

    Picked this up this morning:

It's an apparently bone-stock '81 CB650 with a little over 11,000 miles on it. Guy bought it four years ago with thoughts of turning it into an electric bike but never got around to it; ended up leaving it under a tarp for the entire time. Finally decided to get rid of it (I got the distinct impression there was a wifely ultimatum involved) so posted it up on Craiglist the other day for $100. I happened to see it soon after he posted it and was the first to respond, and he was cool enough to hold it for me.

It was apparently running when he parked it, though the person who sold it to him evidently reported some minor front end issues. At this point the front brake is dragging badly (to the point that pushing it around was a major pain), but I have a feeling that once that's sorted, a new battery is installed, fresh tires mounted, and the tank is filled with fresh gas, getting it running shouldn't be a big problem. I still can't believe the guy was only asking $100 for it.

Plan for the bike is to get it in good riding shape again, then extended-loan it to fellow NESRian and Burlington Bike Night regular Ahamays2 (aka Parker) because he had to sell his bike for financial reasons. So at least he'll have something to ride for the summer. Then when he can afford to buy a new bike I'll probably build a cafe racer out of this one.

If any Burlington-area NESRians would like to contribute time, parts, or funds to get this beast on the road again and Parker back on two wheels, let me know!

Front brake is now unfrozen... but now it's not working at all.

Unfroze it by opening the bleeder valve. Tried to bleed the system, but not much fluid went through. Bolted it all back up, and now the lever just keeps going to the bar. Will have to try one of those syringe thingies to suck the fresh fluid through the whole system.

Sounds like the caliper is froze. I experienced that on a CB400 myself once. Probably a ring of rust around the caliper. Steel wool worked for me.

Sounds like a small thing but make sure the brake line doesn't run above the master cylinder. Had that happen on my first bike. Took a bit to figure it out.

Those bikes are pretty Cool, I had one back in the day that had a problem with a cam chain it sounded like you dragging an aluminum ladder behind you but it was comfy.

I almost snapped that up but figured it was too good to be true. Glad that wasn't the case.

I have a mighty Vac if you want to borrow it.

Those old Honda calipers don't deal well with sitting. My '82 needs to be rebuilt again.

Just order new seals for the caliper and a new master cylinder rebuild kit. Don't bother trying to get the existing stuff working.
