The 1198s is black with a ........wait for it........... grey frame! Loosers!

Now the black 1098s with the red frame was only a 2 year run.

And all the 848 owners who thought they were special with white......

Yea...I figured that might be the case, BUT, should they really need a new look. The bike has been out for less than 2 years...in my opinion it really didnt need a new engine at all, let alone a new body?

The 999 series sat for 4+ years without a change and it was a poor seller, you would think the 1098 which has been much better would stick around longer than 2.

-Same 1198cc engine as the 1098R detuned so it produces only 170hp
-It has Traction control which the 1098R has
-And sources say different style wheels

That pretty much sums it up. I would assume this is going to be nowhere near the price point of the 1098

I dont love the new wheels at all. At all.

Im curious about the price as well. I would think it would have to go up, and perhaps that was always the plan. Sell a bunch of 1098's low, then bring in the 848's close to that price, then bump up to 1198 and more money thus making room for an 848s in the middle??

BUT, with the dec in 1098 sales recently IM nut sure a higher priced bike uis the answerr. Who knows??

Can't wait to see one at the races, will they still fall into the displacement limit? Hopefully Eric Wood will be rockin one.

Did the 916 "need" a new motor when they bumped it up to 996? Did the 996 "need" a new motor when they bumped it up to 998? They hit it right with the body so they aren't going to change it. They probably figure that bumping up the displacement will bring in some new customers.

They didn't bump the motor in the 999 because it was a poor seller, due to the body that no one seemed to like. If the 999 sold better they probably would have kept the body longer and did more with the motor. They did do a little to the 999 over its lifespan, tweaked the nose a little added a deep sump and changed the swing arm in '06.

I don't think the price is going to go up that much. It will go up a little just like the 848 did but that has more to do with the dollar vs. the euro. Just think back to the price difference between the 916-996-998.

Not that the 1098 was a huge seller. I see lots of them on the floor at every Duc dealer I visit. And hear about the crates they still have out back.

Was nice to see a Desmosidici getting a 500 mile service today. Someone is actually riding it, and not just parking it in the living room!

By Ducati standards I think it was. I don't have numbers to support that.

Obviously this 1198 decision was made a long time back so it seems like it was a predetermined thing anyhow, not based on actual sales of the 1098.

I believe it is a move related to going back to their standard price structure.

    848 - 13ish
    848s- ?? 15ish
    1198 - 17ish
    1198s - 22ish

The 1098 was priced low to get ppl in the door and create a market buzz, it did that, sold well, and now they are going back to the more traditional prices on superbikes with the 1198. All just speculation of course...

OK... a few quick facts for ya.

916...in production for FOUR years, plus probably with a special release, I don't know enough.
996...in production for FOUR years, 5 or more total models with the s, sps, R etc
998....in production for a year as a transition to a totally new model.
999....in production for FOUR years...sure a few little upgrades for 05 but basically the same bike.

The 999 motor wasn't upgraded mid cycle b/c its not normally what is done. The typical model cycle has been 4 years. Ducati is branding this 1198 as a whole new bike, check their website. We shall see about the price, but I think I am right about what will happen. Remember, the 1098 was priced WAY low in comparison to a base 999, and I thin that the 1198 may very well go close to that price. I know that the new 1098 based naked bike will start at 15 and I would be surprised to see the 1198 superbike at just 1k more.

You're basing a "typical" cycle off of what they did twice? You have to remember that when the 916 came out they were just getting away from hand built frames so their whole assembly line might not have been up to par, I'm sure they are turning out bikes a lot faster these days anyway. Even if everything I said was completely wrong you have to look at who owned Ducati when all of this was going on. Cagiva Group owned Ducati during the design of the 916 but sold off to Texas Pacific just one year into the 916 being on the market. Now Investindustrial Holdings owns them, has since '05. I'm sure all three different owners have different ideas of what should be done and how long a certain model will stay on the market before a revamp.

I never really paid attention to the cost of the liter bikes over the years but the middle weights have stayed within about $500 of each other since the 748, maybe even before that. We're talking close to 25 years without a significant price increase. You really can't blame them if they do go up a little.
