    10R...more hp than 12R and Busa...WTF

If there is any way possible in this universe I must own one of these...sometime. Found this on the 10R. The whole thing is at article but here is a little slice of it:

That fat rear Dunlop delivers the goods, too. Putting 161.9 horsepower on the pavement at 11,750 rpm, it dethrones the previous dyno king, Kawasaki's ZX-12R (161.4 at 10,000 rpm). Anyone else want a piece of this? The ZX-10R overpowers Suzuki's Hayabusa (156.1 at 9500 rpm), Honda's new CBR1000RR (153.3 at 11,250 rpm) and Yamaha's latest R1 (158.3 at 12,500 rpm). And here's the kicker. Add that 433-pound wet weight to the 170-pound rider we use for spec-chart calculations, divide by 161.9 horsepower, and you have a weight/power ratio of 3.72 pounds per. It just doesn't get any better than that, sports fans.

No wonder beet's burn out, on the 10R, was so easy...I knew these things were hard core, but DAMN

they are close, but those are magazine numbers. the real world dyno numbers are a lot lower than that. but it is pretty impresive. the 12r and busa are going to need to step up now.

someone on sbn said british mag showed 1hp difference between 10R and 1000RR. i dont fuckin know. all i know is i love the power. because of the tall gearing it is not a wheelie machine off the product line as i'v heard of 03 gsxr or r1.

iv also read that 04 R1 and 1000RR has smoother power and better suspension or comfort. i can dig that.

The really messed up thing is that 1000's may soon catch the past 1200, and 1300's. That sounds weird, because all they have to do is apply the same tech to the larger bikes to gain more ground. It's a strange thought that the previous large "super bikes" may soon be made obsolete by the 1000's...thats some stupid power.

I don't know my 03 gixxer may wheelie, but a quick flick of the wrist has not brought me up any. I mean I have flicked that wrist a good amount on the bike and would have to say the the throttle is pretty easy to control on the bike.

I haven't ridden an 04 10R but I think with the wheelbase and the power it's putting out that the 10R would be a wheelie machine more than my gixxer is.

And these bikes are putting out so much power it's almost not even funny anymore. I know my bike has a good amount of power, and the only reason I bought it was because I got a deal and got it for the price of a 600 OTD.

I would love to own a 10R but it is most likely not worth is because I don't really have a use for all of it's power.

it's not just about the power, it's the package.

for me being able to stop a lot faster is even more important then a couple more hp at the rear wheel.

yep there all very fast, until we get into the twisties.

ah no. it is because of the tall gearing. the 1st comes up quicker than 636 but 2nd is hard by just power alone. you need to be up @75 and bounce a little. the wheelie guys would down 1 tooth front then comment "now it's just like my old 03 gsxr".

i'v heard this logic all the time.

there is nothin wrong with some reserved power. there is nothing wrong with owning 600 up rwhp cars. right?

Not trashing anyone's ride or preference here, but horsepower means very little in OUR world. Where us mere mortals live, 100 HP is overkill. What I don't understand about the current HP wars is that all the manu's have voluntarily restricted the new machines to approx 187 MPH...

True, HP can be big fun. But stopping, suspension and brakes will be far more crucial at those power standards. Not to mention learning HOW to use that power and operate something like that safely while still having fun...

I truely don't understand this horsepower race...

Compare HP @ rpm, they only reason they make more HP is cause they rev higher, heck they make 400's that have over 100hp when there doin 18,000revs

I'll take a twin anyday, not as much peak HP, but where you use it on the street there's more.

I share the same feeling. I also prefer superior brakes and suspension over power. Where on earth would you use 150 hp at such high RPMs? I'm a much bigger fan of high torque engines.

I don’t care what anyone says. I love my 10R… though I will NEVER use all the power.
I like the whole package…the looks, stopping faster, and the way it handles. The acceleration power is there if I should need it.
Everyone has their own opinion, but until you’ve ridden one, you just don’t know.

IMHO, it's not so much about the amount of HP, as much as it is about the delivery. One other thing that is quite noticeable is the way the greater reciprocating mass of the big bores makes them behave much differently than a 600 class bike, regardless of how close their static weights are. For me, that's the (worthwhile) trade off. Also, the byproduct of developing such tremendous power is the further development of those other aspects, i.e., chassis, tires, suspension, brakes, etc. Nothing wrong with that.

    re: governed speed
Do not many car manufacturer's have the same "gentlemen's agreement" regarding top end?

Now, if this wx clears up, I can experiment further with MY ZX-10R.

And I don't really like to compare a 600hp car to a bike anyway. A 600hp car would be easier to control any day of the week.

Like Carol Shelby said about cars & racing - "Horsepower sells cars, but Torque wins races"

the most important part of that quote is HORSEPOWER SELLS!!! (although that alone shouldn't & i think we can all agree to that)

I agree fully, until you've ridden something with so much power you don't realize how nice it is.

The new litre bikes do come close in the HP to the 12R and the Busa, but are still far off in the torque department. (I don't know much about the 12R but I am sure it is close to the same as the Busa). Also they Busa makes more power through the RPM range than the litre bikes. It's once the Busa redlines that the new bikes start catching up. Also the torque on a Busa is higher earlier than pretty much any v-twin that I have compaired. This and the way the Busa makes it's power is the reason why it can still pull on the litre bikes. If it was just HP it would be no contest beause of the weight factor. Now get in a straight line with equal riders and they will be ahead.

The new litre bikes are awesome. It is great to see what they are doing with these new setups. It's also about time Kawasaki was up top again. .

HP may not be the winning factor at any track, but let's face it, how many of us spend the majority of the time riding around at the track? How many of us have a stretch of road that puts a smile on your face when you "punch it"?

A perfect example for this is Florida. With steeply banked highways and "gentle" curves, you really make FULL USE of the HP. In many places, it's like a "magnified" track. The effect of lower HP in FL is kind of like doing a track day at Loudon on a pocketbike.

So, believe it or not, there is more to riding than skillfully riding "twisties"... But, of course, we all know twisties makes "real" riders...
Well put. It only takes me one mile from a dead stop to get over 180+ true MPH on my bike. If I am already running at 70MPH and find a 2 mile straight I can have a really good time. I lived on the coast of NC for a while and we didn't really have any twisties. Most of our roads were long and straight so the big thing there was drag racing and hi power bikes, not so much the good twistie bikes. Until you are forced into riding like that you won't appreciate the the fun you can have in a straight line.

It's probably the companies getting together and and deciding it. It can't be for safety reasons...187 MPH...nope not safe. I also don't know if it could be for mechanical/aerodynamic reasons (brake failure points, aerodynamic lifting effects, aerodynamic brick wall in that range, etc).
