    New (to me) 1974 TX500

peppy little vintage bike... it's pretty clean, torn between leaving it as-is and doing the street tracker project I've been wanting to do.

Re: New (to me) 1974 TX500

I was looking for an SR 500, and accidentally came across this guy.

    TX500 - 2 cyl, 8 valve, 50HP, Top speed 110 mph, 5 speed, air cooled, 425 lbs.

    SR500 - 1 cyl, 2 valve, 27 HP, Top speed 91 mph, 5 speed air cooled, 383 lbs.

pumped to score it, and may possibly have a line on an sr500 as well.

Dude that thing is gonna be sweet! I approve of the dirt tracker. What number would you put on it though? Your teammate seems to have stolen yours...

I would most likely pass on the number plates.

I would like to go all out, but on this tx, I may not do anything permanent... Maybe just a tail and bars, and save the oem stuff in storage. If I can find a donor that's not so fresh, I would be willing to go more custom.

If those numbers are true, that thing makes some pretty good power for an old twin cylinder air cooled 8 valve 500!!!!

Looks decently clean, I can't see what you mean about not wanting to hack it up too much.

I'd feel bad bastardizing a bike that needs little for restoration. The numbers seem to correlate across sources, it's not a dragster, but definitely fun. the xs 650 is only 4 valve, 50HP (as well), and 50 lbs heavier... And nowhere near as rare.

Re: New (to me) 1974 TX500

Id consider leaving it alone or just simple mods. I really regret chopping my minty rd to pieces to this day. bike came out nice but i always regretted doing what i did to it. I should have looked for a real beater.

Street Track the shit out of thast thing. Cooll score. I'm always looking for a project and I think I'm going to add the TX500 to the list of desirable bikes.

Re: New (to me) 1974 TX500

OK, so I found a '73 for the tracker project...

Took the '74 to work today, needs a front tire, and could use a once-over (brake improvement, maybe carb clean or bigger main jet).

    Very comfortable around-town riding position.
