1996 Honda XR80: opinions?

Are these fun, reliable dirt bikes?

Is it cheap and easy to maintain/work on?

Do they comfortably fit an adult?

How hard is it to make it a winter backyard putter/spring wheelie machine?

Are they anything like those fun fiddy's I see all the time, but only w' a bigger engine?

I have one. Cheap/reliable enough. Not big enough to fit an adult on comfortably for anything but mild fooling around.

If you got a line on one cheap, let me know, I need some parts.

They're stone reliable. No HP, but reliable. They're sprung way too soft, but you can still goof around on one. Best when there's a nice dumping of white stuff on the ground to jump into, to soften the crash landing. I'd take one for free, but I wouldn't put any money into one.

I think a TT-R125 would be a much better way to go, as they're sized a bit larger and have enough poke in stock form to actually get you around faster than you can run. Something the XR80 cannot do very well, especially if there's an incline involved. And now that they've been around a while, there have been some used ones listed for not much money.

Get a TT-R 125, as some have seen, you can rip them pretty well.

ehh, I already got it...it wasn't really, really cheap, but the price seemed fair

it'll be pretty much a backyard machine for the winter/snow and wheelie machine for the driveway and parkinglots...

any idea how to put pegs on the rear axle? I've seen people do some nice standups that way...

got it home, got it to start, idle, and run wot...it IS too small for serious trail riding, but it def. looks like a fun winter backyard toy...

In a response to your PM cause I'm lazy.

No, mine doesn't run. I do have the manual for it and I also may be getting rid of it depending on what else I can find. I need to swap the bottom end of one engine with the top end of another. Also gotta convert from points style to CDI. Gotta swap the forks and put in new (any) steering head bearings, etc.

Just not worth my time at this point unless I somehow end up with a heated garage.

Too bad too, this thing is the pefect size for me.

come onnnnn...get that thing going

today I fired her up (first kick), and I took her around the backyard a few times...it was actually sort of fun

and if I standup, bounce on the pegs, lean back, and time the throttle right, I can get a little wheelie out of it!

I'm already giddy about this bike...and was a lot more when I got home from work because I got to romp around in the snow!!

I was just going to tinker around then sell it later on, but I think I might take some time to clean it, tune it, and adjust everything necessary to make a fun machine.
