2001 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa - breakdirt916

    Re: 2001 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa - breakdirt916

Agreed it is pretty good and lighter than other bikes this size...actually easier to roll around than expected...it’s just during the roll one I was really on the front brake limits hoping to scrub speed more quickly. The only real solution for me is to slow down.

Rode Ortega highway today with traffic and did not pass many cars. Even aired to 42psi these tires were too squared to lean...and dare I say, the Vstrom was more fun in the canyons!

Oh yeah and 85 miles later my rear end is sore. Bike feels a little cramped on the legs for long rides although you can slide pretty far back on the seat if you have long arms

    Rode out to wine country

Ha, babying it under 5k all the time, gentle launches, so far I got 45mpg over 118 miles

EDIT: speedo is off by a lot due to re-gearing...so more like 36-38mpg

345th EDIT: pics, also I was super sore by mile 180-200ish...even with the gel seat...guess I gotta build my endurance. More day trips

rode alongside 3 lamborghini's out...did not race any. let the s1000rr go past me in the canyons.

Here it is when I rescued it from under a cover in Coxsackie, NY back in 2013. Had to remove the muffler to kitty corner it on this clearly too small trailer.

    Who is KLp?

But ya it is definitely a bike worth saving... it is a good piece of machinery

I had my first couple emergency stops and the last couple days. Rear brake was easier to lock up then expected so definitely more front bias braking. It stops just as well as most other bikes, so just don’t outride your brakes, eyes up and keep a good braking bubble.

Bike does randomly cut out 2% of the time...definitely need to check that FI code someday

Also got a road speed related squeal developing up front (happens with engine off) so so am guessing it is wheel bearing time

But man, this passing power/torque in 6th...is it addicting? Will all other bikes be measured against this?

Also I am pretty sure I enjoy California 10x more than any other transplant, since I enjoy the weather daily, beat traffic, park more easily, and see other bikes on my commute. Man the non-moto peeps are missing out...

you guys are going to hate me

you guys are going to hate me

    .....

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS ATROCIOUS ACT TO A BUSA

turns out the hump comes off with 4 screws...drilled the mount into the seat...then popped on the seat. feels pretty good...the hardware came with lock nuts too

now I can grocery run, leave my helmet on the bike when I am out and about, I can store my jacket/knee guards, and refuse rides from fat chicks.

already have an LED tail/brake light strip

    topped off oil

    ordered new front wheel bearings

    ^^

I hope so...but then again I somehow managed to get pulled over on the Weestrom 650...so yeah I dunno

speed tested it on a windy day, she was pretty stable

but again, really have to ride with some chill factor. bike is adequate in 6th gear under 5200rpm...no need to pass the bmw that aggressively cut you off at lightning speed and see a tractor trailer truck slowing down ahead.

Edit: you feel the weight in an emergency brake. Oops you are going too fast. Oops you are on the brakes but the bike isn’t slowing down because of its sheer momentum.

    Re: 2001 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa - breakdirt916

rolled my first bike night...felt like a boss answering when I parked and couple dudes on 600's were like "how many cc"

it started to "california rain" so I tried it on wet/slick. I tried the same thing I do on every rain ride - slow and smooth is the name of the game. didn't want to learn how to use all that power with tailgaters. the vstrom I was confident in near WOT because of the weight balance on narrow tires...still figuring that out on the busa

top case is awesome. stow the helmet/jacket/knee guards and lug groceries. I use it every day

bike needs more lights so people can see me...single headlight doesn't feel like enough

rode home yesterday without any "uh oh, I'm about to meet God" moments. I really just told myself not to ramp up and pass people...just let them go if they block you out. people that drive like they are trying to irritate you is socal daily. don't get caught up in that.

I like your top case set up. I've been thinking about rigging up a ghetto mount on the grab bar of my gs500. I don't need a lot, but it would be nice to have somewhere to stow my jacket and gloves so I'm not wearing them on the train...

a real turbo busa! nice mang!

    what happened here?!?

fcs surf rack - wrapped around top case

fcs surf rack - wrapped around frame/fairings with a spacer on the bottom

fit was real tight...I could get my right foot down, but had to wiggle it through. board pushed against the knee the whole ride...needless to say I found shifting into first before stopping meant I almost never had to put my right foot down

weirdest thing, I did not split and went with the flow of traffic - people did NOT see me at all...had to rev the bike twice to alert a black C300 that I was in the lane she was merging into. she woke up quickly. I am guessing people don't see a single headlight on a black bike regularly... splitting actually is safer....ride like everyone is out to kill ya...don't ride with them, because you are not one of them.

People don't see anything when they drive.... It's a crap shoot if you make it home or not anymore. The average persons driving skill and attention span has deteriorated incredibly since everyone has a cell phone!

Yes of course - I should have prefaced - compared to the Vstrom, nobody sees me. I don’t know if the Vstrom was bigger, or just better resembled a Moto cop, but comparatively speaking, people would heed my approach and part the seas with the DL. Factory exhaust

was a little tight, but helped me get the paddle tire swapped for the YZ...

I am missing some prime desert riding season off road...need to go through the YZ250 asap and get on some rides

busa burns oil...haven't determined how much, but it does burn a lot of oil

definitely not going to be a touring bike...just commuting, bike nights, errands around the city, etc. will sell this by next spring

    Re: 2001 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa - breakdirt916

If I get 2 hayabusas and put a turbo in each, is that a twin turbo?

But man, I pulled over to let a big BMw sport touring bike pass me because I was “lane splitting too slow” (he was revving at people to get through) watched him make a couple close calls, then come in too hot and smash into the rear corner of a car. Once stopped, he couldn’t keep his bike up and fell on the mini van next to him, then started frantically yelling “I got a cramp!” And was trapped between his bike and the mini van. Traffic was stop and go, so I made sure I was safe by making sure the car behind me would wait, stopped, I parked the Busa, picked up his bike so he could get out and pushed it
Off the road. He hobbled over and sat down, made sure he was okay, and could call for help, luckily the mini van he ran into also stopped, and they all seems civil to help each other out, exchanged info, then I took off.

Seriously...slow the F down. That’s a trap with the Busa I am avoiding...it’s pretty comfortable going fast

    71 degrees today!

But left fork seal is leaking bad...drips when parked...going to aim for early 2019 to get that

Also helped a dude plug a tire...reminded me to keep the kit and pump on the bike!

Also looking for a switched lead - just use low beam or tail/running light?

I doubt the Busa is gone for good. I'm guessing a big refresh is in the works. I'm hoping factory forced induction which will make Kawasaki respond with their own big-bore forced induction model. The resulting battle will be awesome for those of us that prefer the larger sport bikes!

man...so california just enacted a new law - $1,000 fine, not fixable for loud/modified exhausts

maybe I should unload the Busa for sure and just get tires for the Ninja and ride that (factory exhaust)

    also...
1.) when it rained last week, I had an uphill start from a light and the rear end fishtailed sideways under power over white painted lines
2.) water is pooling somewhere - after it rained, the bike ran on 3 cylinders for a couple days...then resolved
3.) the pilot road tires are $220/piece...I need a new one after 2-3 months of riding...if I keep commuting on this it will easily be $1,000+/year alone on rear tires
