    Yup...I need it!

Also passed 10,000 miles on her sometime last week #rackitup

Keeps feeling like every couple months I have to spend $100-$200 on wear item maintenance (tires...chain sprockets...oil change...this month brake pads all around...and now tires again LOL)...but that means I am riding a lot...noice!

    PR4 next...

And iglu mentioned less headshake on the landwhale by servicing the forks and new steering head bearings...sounds like I need that! My forks leak a little

I did the steering head bearings on my Wee before I even registered it. Do that, new fork seals and front wheel bearings, all available from All Balls racing via Amazon.

Steering Stem Bearing Replacement / Upgrade | Black Lab Adventures

    special tools...stuck races...maybe I should pay a shop to do this...looks horrible

but the description is accurate...if I coast down a hill and let go of the bars, they start to shake

going to start with brakes, tires, fork seals, then maybe drop it off at a shop for the head bearings...bike should be 100% by 2019-2020

It's not hard. But given your situation and comfort level of working on bikes, def have a shop do it.

You'll feel better in the end. Well, except your asshole, cause they are gunna FUCK you on price.

Steering Race Remover - Get the one that's appropriate for your size bearings (they sell two sizes) and it makes race removal cake.

I have a set of dies for pressing/hammering in new races, or you can just use the old races for that job.

The only real PITA is removing the bearing from the steering stem/lower clamp. That job I outsource.

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

Never needed to use the special tools to remove the races, even in the Oldwing Medicade I just did which doesn't have any gallies to allow easy access. Always managed with a long punch.

Removing the bearing from the steering stem is a breeze. Just do as the manual instructs. Chisel between the race and the bottom of the tree. Boom, 20 seconds later it's off.

hmm....maybe...I will read that DIY thingie a few times to build my confidence...just maybe

his video standing on the pegs without his hands on the bar and the bike going straight is the kind of stability I'd like. Never done steering bearings, but looking back, by 2nd FZR definitely needed it. First one somehow did not even after I beat the F out of it for 10 years...maybe I'll practice on the YZ250 (PK did the RM125)

I fought with punches and drifts for a few hours on my V65 Sabre, decided never again to play that game. Now with the tool and my trusty sledge it's a couple taps, done.

    very cool!

and WOW Eastern Beaver has a ton of good harnesses for the Vstrom!

    I have a few needs:
    1.) relay powered headlights
2.) switched power lead for heated grips
3.) switched power lead for LED brake/taillights and crash bar mounted LED lights

looks like they can definitely hook it up!

    why headlights, you say?

followed the black lab tutorial...now riding home at night isn't so sketchy

So it works...except one time I had to jiggle the switch, one flick, to get it going

    Eastern Beaver for sure

Also my rear brake lever is starting to stick again...and my front brake light switch is a dud. Rear brake is a 20 minute remove n lube job, front brake switch is $8ish on Amazon...will order tonight after work!

37,999 miles today...you could say it's driven or ridden

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

So I finally went back off road for a shakedown...

First half of the run was bad...death gripping the bars...2nd gear, even 1st and afraid of the top case lock breaking and the whole thing coming off. I also blamed my overall riding on the lack of lighting "I wish I was on the YZ already" blah blah blah.

Made it to a trail head, took a breather, waited for a couple 4x4 Toyota trucks to pass (gave them a 10 minute Head start) and took off.

Way back was WAY better. Finally got loose on the bike/bars... finally used the night shadows to my advantage (you can see where the rocks and drops are way better). 2nd and 3rd gear, smoother riding. Passed every truck on the way back...no problem making clean passes.

    Fun little ride after work!

Also street raced a big Harley First light I wasn't redlining the bike and he took me. 2nd light I asked him for one more. Had an excellent launch with the soft clutch engagement and had a super light wheelie feeling letting out the lever. I ran it into the end of each gear and I pulled ahead by 9,000rpm -> redline. He had to shift well before I did, and each time he dropped a little farther behind. Couple out of shape guys running the 100 meter dash in 6 mins

NO NOT THE POOR DUCKS THEY DIDN'T HURT ANYONE

I could do it myself...but the quality of my construction for a harness on a daily ridden, out in the elements bike, that goes down the bumpy road I would prefer my main headlights be with Properly constructed wiring harness.

I know loudbeard...did I not work so hard to win the title of cheapest rider on nesr? I may just be getting old

Extra off road/driving lights, heated grips, blah blah I will DIY

Cool thing about the Eastern Beaver kits is they give you a hot lead without having to splice into your factory wiring too. so I can fuse it and use it for all my stupid sex accessories

    Always!

Guess what happens when your first EFI bike runs out of gas at 209 miles? Sputter? Reserve?

    No...just quits.

Paddle walked to the side walk and pushed it the last 0.5 mile to a gas station (luckily level land)

Okay, so my range is 200 miles..check

    She's a 40mpg bike

Ruh roh...slow cranks for 2 days now...made enough cranks to start and get to work

I should have bought a regulator the day I bought the bike

So looks like a tow home...and I gotta find a battery local and I will order a R/R (or is it just a regulator?) On lunch or call some dealers

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

well, no dealer had it in stock between here and montana...and everyone can get it by Wednesday/Thursday (including ebay)

texted a local moto mechanic and he recommended elctrosport in Aliso Viejo (25 mins from work) - I emailed them, and they have it in stock!

    and I'm off on Monday!

just like the clutch push rod, this part will leave you stranded...I may even consider getting a spare

but honestly, I am going to take a couple week break from riding....flat tire, dead battery, and fried R/R in 3 days? that's the moto gods telling me to get the F off the bike to prevent some sort of accident

Plus 11,000+ miles in 8 months bro...I've been having fun riding

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

Electric problem may be in stator make sure you test for ground faults etc.

All vstroms should have a voltage indicator

Look around for SERIES R/R there is a polaris one thats only $80

Go on stromtrooper contact Greywolf for part number

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

yeah, I was wrong...how could I doubt "the forums" and greywolf?

yeah, probably the stator....yeah, I didn't bother testing before I started fixing

yeah, above 3,000rpm I don't even get above 11.8ish volts

I'm sure the regulator will die *eventually*...so I may as well do both and note the mileage

good news: I can return the $120 battery if my current 10 month old battery can actually hold a charge...I will charge that tonight and head over to electrosport on Wednesday to grab a stator. It's supposed to have 25% more power anyways for sex-cessories

EDIT: After a mere 2 hours on a battery tender the bike fired right up.

EDIT #2: hey, the battery will hold a charge for a 40 mile round trip ride...I just need to hook it up to a tender when I get home so I can still ride to work! Phew...2 days in the F150 and I was going nuts.

next stop: ride from Barstow to Palmdale (roughly 90 milles) with temps expected in the low 40's...

I have a big insulated rain suit that kept me toasty for LAB2V in 2015...so I may just layer up with that and leave it on the bike in a saddle bag during the ride

also need some grip heaters, some big wind blocking protection for the hands, the eastern beaver (headlight kit) to power them, and PR4 tires as mine are pretty much shot.

I have 2 days off between now and the ride. Goal: finish all this on work days
