2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

  1. #151

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

    O Rly!

    Yes...yes....will send pm

But dang wtf on the front brake calipers LOL...why do they need 14mm bolts?! I had the full weight of my body, stepping down as hard as I could and couldn't get it to budget...just round off the bolt

Hit it with a DeWalt impact driver to no avail (wtf are those things good for? I always do better with a breaker bar)

Got one side off and swapped the pads, but definitely need to swap the bolts.. ordered more...still need to do the other side (maybe with heat and breaker bar), swap the stator, and get an Eastern Beaver harness for the headlights with a relay for LED lights and heated grips

I can get about 50 miles on a overnight charge so I use the battery tender when I get home and can usually get to work and just make sure I don't stop or turn off the bike on the way home

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

    Dead ication

Look at the series regulator R/R conversion a Polaris part costs about $80, stator will run cooler

Unless you ride at 80 all the time bike should get about 50 mpg or better

Hope you have 6 point wrenches for brake bolts

Really heating the fork leg sounds like a bad idea

Have you tried penetrating oil? When we have to get off some rusty old bobbin, we spray it daily for a week, and give it a whack or two on the end.

Sounds like aluminum fork leg with a steel bolt. Galvanic corrosion.

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

yup, hit it with penetrating fluid yesterday...hopefully it will come off!

so okay, no heat...but I didn't try the 6 point socket since I needed a deep socket to get enough clearance. Maybe a breaker bar w' 6 point socket will work (since breaker bars are typically angled).

Yes, I ride 95-115 indicated (so maybe 80-90 actual) all the time. It's crazy that when I merge from the carpool lane it's a damn race and I sometimes need to top out the bike just to get past people. California

but yeah...uh that stator needs to get fixed, today.

my retard roommate unplugged the extension cord connected to the battery tender that goes outside to charge the bike..."oh sorry bro, I thought you check if it's plugged in"

wake up for the Long Beach IMS - battery dead

Charged it for 1-1/2 hours so it started fine and healthy

But for the first time since I started having stator issues, the bike just completely shut off while it was riding.

The voltage got so low the EFI shut down...got a jump start and unplugged the headlights.

Made it home fine, but yes, that stator needs to get swapped yesterday. Manual just says, remove cover, unplug old stator, reverse steps for installation...going to try it out now.

Ducati models were hot! goldwing was not. Did not see a 790 on display.

got home from IMS and realized why they need 100,000lb feet of torque for the caliper bolts - the rear 10mm bolt came off on a 20 minute ride!!

just another reason to park the damn thing...

    ordered a replacement from RMATV

box came yesterday w' YZ stuff & bolt not there - it's back ordered

come onnnnn vstrom. I wanna work 55-60 hours/week for the next month so I can cash in on all the shifts people need covered for the holidays. Gonna be way less fun waiting in socal holiday traffic in the truck

    mcmaster.com

Also look up Class 8 bolts or ALL allen heads are class 8 or better

    and class 8 washers

Not bring one and test at hardware there are 3 different thread standards for metric bolts.
Take one to a hardware store and test with nuts in the draw

    mcmaster will ship same day

Using low-strength thread-locker is a good idea too, as is a grease/paint marker for the important bolts. I did that on the dirt bike to make sure shit doesn't come flying off...

I also believe that Loctite blue also works as a sealant stopping the corrosion that chemically welds them

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

So the past couple days have been absolutely horrid traffic and I am sometimes later for work than I'd like if there is an accident

So this morning I finally took 2 hours and replace the front brake pads using a breaker bar to get off the caliper and swapped the last set of pads...of course the *last* set were in the worst shape

I then kept everything on the bike (tank, airbox, etc.) and unhooked the stator wires from the regulator, pulled off the cover, and swapped the stator to get a solid 14.3-14.5 volts!

I still need to top off the oil and hand tighten everything and maybe use Loctite on some of these bolts before I go on commuting with it again but I am getting there!

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

    Bolt arrived!!

    Ready to ride, right?

JUST KIDDING. It's leaking oil around the stator cover...cleaned the cover, started the bike, a drip comes out every 30 seconds or so...same spot.

So park it ANOTHER damn week and order a new stator cover gasket!

EDIT 1: checking dealers...I want this fixed yesterday. Got some thread locker and using torque wrench on all caliper bolts.

EDIT 2: found it at a dealer an hour away! 2 hour drive for $11 gasket but then I can swap that while the sun is out and ride to work tomorrow

EDIT 3: Bike's been parked for nearly a damn month...couldn't I have gotten a gasket earlier? No, I am retarded. For some reason I didn't think crankcase oil circulated around a stator. But I got it from the world's largest powersports showroom - Bert's Mega Mall!

They actually had a Ninja 600R on display too!

One hour left of light! Let's fix this damn thing & do an oil change while I'm at it!!

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

So I am at the last freaking step....and the stupid cover won't go on. There's a metal pin that lines up with this gear, but the gear itself is not lined up in the case

there is little to almost no free play to line it back up...so I've been jiggling this thing for an hour to no avail. sometimes it meshes with the tiny gear on the bottom (fixed won't spin), sometimes it meshes with the bigger gear (also pretty firm, won't spin), and in both cases it's not lining up for the pin to go all the way through to the hole on the other side of it.

if the gear won't go into its correct place, the pin won't line up with the stator cover and the cover will not go back on

edit: the tiny lower gear can be turned! moves the gear into place....then I pushed the pin all the way through before putting n the stator cover

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

You're not ready to put the cover on, the gasket surface is filthy.

  18. #168

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

I wiped it down...most of it is oil residue...the rest of the remaining gasket is flush with the surface and a flat head screwdriver doesn't take it off. I'd have to turn a slotted screwdriver sideways and scrape with the edge to get it out...at that point, I'd be gouging the rest of the surface.

I got the gasket cover on and it doesn't leak anymore

The bike started, and ran for about 5 to 10 minutes. Within the first block, it cut out momentarily under WOT. Then 100 yards down the street from my house on my way home the RPM's were erratic, throttle response was intermittent, and the bike died. I could smell some electrical burning faintly, but it wafted away quickly. I paddle walked it home and tried to crank it over. It didn't start. I turned it off, tried to clean up a bit and tried it again; it started momentarily, ran rough, then stalled.

I talked to my mobile mechanic and he told me to install a new battery and R/R and go from there. I was actually thinking about putting the old stator back in to see if it made a difference.

I have the electrosport R/R, new in box ready to go, but the R/R install may involve taking off the tank/airbox...so I will have to commit a full day off to give it a shot and maybe take some more time to determine what's going on. Thursday will be the day...

    Re: 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 - breakdirt916

Posted on Strom troopers and emailed electrosport...they both suggested the same thing: crankshaft position sensor.

25 minutes start to finish and found the screws loose! Tightened them down and good to go!

Was a little spooked about the cover...I used a Allan key to tighten it down by hand and worried about over-tightening it. Case metal felt soft...using the Allan key the "long way" worried me that it would strip..there are a lot of items that thread into the stator cover. So afraid of stripping it. Good news is that I would just get a replacement cover and roll on.

But finally rode to work and felt great! Especially after driving the truck, so the bike actually felt "fast".

So I have a few issues with this bike... nothing fatal, but not feeling confident about reliability...maybe look for another lower mileage bike and spend a little more money? I dunno

lol...phone autocorrect...some of it probably voice to chat too

I re-read this thread and remembered the mission statement:
    -low theft risk
    -comfortable commuter
-bags to store gear at work

Bubba calls it a great cali bike...I just need to use it as such. I will stick it out a bit, do some maintenance and do some long rides until I move again and get a garage...

Trust me it's on my mind!

Having the Vstrom is awesome right now. I am working a lot, running all my errands, surfing, and enjoying the ride

Bike has been running great so far...temps are high 40's at night/AM commute so a base layer + rain suit + $20 cyclegear gloves keep me toasty. May add heated grips, LED lights, and an LED brake light next

Made me think about the headlight harness - I *could* make my own harness, fuse it, and can always plug that directly into the headlight bulb as a fail safe if I muck something up

Been rolling bike nights recently...and garandman is correct; it fits in adequately with cruisers and (minus high speed freeway runs) I can zip around traffic with sportbikes just fine

If you buy heated gear, skip the vest for the full jacket. Your arms are in the airstream so the jacket keeps you a lot warmer.

Bought an SAE extension cable so I can use mine on the tractor as well.
