Not everything is about practicality and at a price point below or right around $3k (nice job Honda!) these things have fun written all over them. The fact that it is street legal also lends to the appeal.
I wouldn't at be surprised if I owned one somewhere down the line just for the fun of it.
Admittedly in MA with the registration and associated insurance costs it is slightly less appealing than someplace like NH where insurance is not mandatory.

Upside down forks! Stoppies! THe Z50 has come of age. This would be insanely fun. Honda finally built something that is not an appliance! It will sell like hotcakes.

Like I said, resale is going to be big on these. Nobody wants to pay up front, but everyone wants one regardless. They'll retain their value pretty darn well.

Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look
Anyone know of any kart tracks locally to run these? Or even the kart course at Lime Rock.....

I asked about Boxshop in Maine. This is the response I got:

Not sure if Boxshop and 'kart tracks' are completely different things.
Guy on SVRider won one in some sort of giveaway. He is a big MiniGP guy and has an NSR50. He said he plans on running the Grom.

Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look
In a Grom only class, it would be fun. Like Proddy twins, just a bit more expensive and faster.

Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look
Get a few to show up as a class and I bet Aaron will do it at Boxshop. Hell, enter as a pitbike and you'll be a separate class anyways, I don't think anyone else bothers with that class now.

So how many of you are lining one of these up as a gift to yourself disguised as a gift for wife, SO, kid, etc?

I would be the first to say "guilty". Especially since I sold her Rebel without her consent.

I agree. But then I am talking out of my ass and don't actually have any real clue what racing anything-even these mini things-costs. Every time I ask the answer dissolves into "more than you have are willing to hide from the wife".
At present my read of the Boxshop classes is that you basically have to show up with a kids' dirt bike with several hundred (maybe thousands) worth of hop-ups thrown at it. A really really 'showroom stock' class based around something inexpensive like this seems like it would cost less to me.
But I am way on the outside looking in.

Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look
Open Pitbike would be the class to run, there are zero entries now that I'm out so it'd be Gromtastick if a bunch showed up.

Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look
Saw a guy riding one around at Motorsport today. That thing is freaking tiny. The price is ridiculous especially considering the size.
-
Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look
Put 50 miles on the Grom yesterday. Had the wife on the back for 5 or so. So far I couldn't be happier with it. I really can't believe how comfy this thing is, considering the size. It's quicker than you'd expect to 45-50mph, then it has to work hard to keep pulling. 57 was all i could get out of it, but I guess the motor's known to free up considerably after 200ish miles. Mine still smells like burning paint when it's running lol.
This bike isn't for everybody. For my purposes, it's exactly what I've been looking for.

Re: 2014 Honda Grom - First Look

That looks like a ton of fun. Can you imagine a guy my size doing that? You could sell seats like it was a circus show.
