Length of intake has a much bigger effect than length of exhaust. And anyway. it's the length of the headers to the merge that has the most effect.
Also, undertails weigh more. Especially if you can't afford titanium. Not to mention the oversized subframe you need to support the muffler and pipes. On the V4 GP bikes, the reasons as you mentioned make sense. And on street bikes, who cares. You need an oversized subframe to lug your girl (or boy, I don't judge) around anyway.

EDIT: ipso facto, I like the bike. Hate the exhaust. Ditch it for a nice header/can combo. Why did they have to make the exhaust part of the fairing lines?

On my short list of "Bucket List" obtainable bikes. Very hard to find and that is a gem. Must have been very hard to part with.

I bought it new in 2000, sold it in 2008. At the time, it was easy to part with it, but still kick myself for parting with it. I believe it's been sold and bought a few times since then as well

Question the accuracy of that listing, there is no such thing as a 2002 R7..it's a 1 year run, only 500 made in 1999. The was a rumor of 250 R7's being built in 2000, but never found facts to back it up

That seems like a good deal, signed and with the "OW02 YAM" registration plus no miles it's barely more than the new price was in the UK. Unless it's a fake...

Looks much nicer in person than in studio photos, I must admit.
