I slept on it. Still ugly. I dont like all the patchwork fairings, especially around the lower/exhaust. And none of the lines flow.

The first titanium fracture-split con rods on a production motorcycle

To achieve a new level of pure sport performance, the new R1 engine is fitted with titanium fracture-split connecting rods. The specific titanium alloy used to manufacture the new con rods is around 40% lighter than steel, and this major reduction in weight gives the new engine an extremely responsive and potent character at high rpm.

The fracture-split design also ensures that the big end shape has an extremely high level of circular precision, giving consistent high rpm performance. On top of that, it reduces the tendency of the big end to deform at high rpm, giving excellent levels of reliability.

hate to have to pay for replacements when something pops

should be able to get almost every last drop of oil out with that pan design.

I like it a lot. The headlight design encourages/allows easy attachment of a number plate for TDs and such

The M may well be worth the extra coin, depending on how good those electronic boingers are... the wiring coming out of the fork caps makes me a little nervous in a tumble though.

People who complain about exhaust appearance.... c'mon, we all know the big ugly cans these days are all to meet emissions regulations and everyone is going to replace them right away anyways.

You can meet emissions standards and keep the undertail.

Undertail exhaust is a thing of the past, I'm glad Yamaha didn't plague the new R1 with the negative effects of an undertail exhaust.

I also like the front end the more I look at it, I'd rather see the small headlights where they are vs botching up the upper lines of the M1. The black one is sorta dreamy looking

I meant more about how people complain about big funny looking cans and big catalytic converters and all that stuff... it's just silly, you're going to remove it anyways.

And undertail just means more backpressure anyways right (longer pipes)? So the design inherently would make less top end HP which is the point of a superbike... eh?

Yeah, the new R1 might be a quantum leap forward from an engineering standpoint. But visually... backwards.

Yeah, I get that, I suppose. Keep in mind I had an SV650 for 8 years as my only bike and picked up a 675 this summer. For street use, I see nothing wrong with knocking it down a few horse. I'm not the best judge of "the point" of a superbike on the street.

I'm calling BS. The Honda and Ducati GP bikes have had undertails for years. The downsides are just marketing speak. If they don't change it up every few years, people won't run out to buy new ones.

Length of intake has a much bigger effect than length of exhaust. And anyway. it's the length of the headers to the merge that has the most effect.

The R1M also features magnesium wheels, swingarm, subframe and titanium exhaust.

undertail exh.. fry ur ass.. the 1st gen R1 that had seat under exh (2004) was an oven..
i think the exhaust looks good. !

i dont know why they dont make em like they did the 2007 gsxr750..

I think the 07 gsxr was an awesome exh from the factory.. then in 08 they ruined it.

Looks like they couldn't make up their mind if they wanted a more naked or less full fairing look? Call me old school but, the bodywork and lines of both the R7 and FZR-R were clean and flowed. Even the newer versions had a pattern that matched the overall appearance. +1 on the drivetrain, though.

Yeah, and the Yams don't... so what's different?

On the Duc and Honda GP machines there are both undertail and under slung pipes... the undertails are for the back cylinders in the V, so they still maintain the shorter overall distance than if they wrapped around from the front. On the Yam, being an inline design, you don't see them going undertail to gain additional muffler volume.
