on Route 9 kills three
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
1 hour, 31 minutes ago
Stoddard – An accident involving a Jeep Cherokee and seven motorcycles left three people dead Friday at the start of Motorcycle Week.
State Police Lt. Jerome Maslan said the motorcycles were headed east on Route 9 at about noon when one motorcycle drifted into the oncoming path of the Jeep as they rounded a curve.
The driver of the Jeep lost control and veered into the eastbound lane, striking three motorcycles, said Maslan. The drivers of two other bikes lost control and went down.
Only one bike made it through unscathed.
Three people on bikes died and three others were injured. One was flown to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Three people in the Jeep were treated for non-life threatening injuries, Maslan said.
Police withheld the names of the dead and injured pending notification of relatives.
The accident closed Route 9 for about five hours.
Motorcycle Week is an annual rally in Laconia that attracts thousands of bikers from around the country.
I was thinking the same thing... and if they were.. prolly those worthless salad bowls.Originally posted by JeffL
$10 says not one of them was wearing a helmet.

WHAT A FUCKING ARROGANT RESPOSE TO PEOPLE BEING KILLED ON MOTORCYCLES.
I am glad I'm not all high and mighty like you people are when somebody gets killed or injured. I didn't realize everytime somebody gets killed they were automaticall NOT wearing a helmet.

You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.
I read about it this am too in the Boston Globe....terrible tragedy. There is a quote about the helmet issue....in this case, a cop noted, a helmet would have been irrelevent, the impact was so great. Even a top line Arai is only good up to 20+ mph if your head hits a solid object like a curb...even with an excellent lid on, its your brain being slammed up against the inside of your skull that does the damage.

you act surprised by this. i think if they were sportbikes people on this site would have reacted differently. do you think if they were indeed sportbikes and you went on a harly site it would be any different responces? i doubt it. it would have been fucking jap bikes probley racing.
don't get me wrong it sucks anyway you look at it but the two groups are so jaded toward each other at this point i'd expect no less.
rip peace and everybody be safe.
"Two of the motorcyclists who were killed were wearing helmets."
This is a quote from the story that was on the MUR site, so you statment "I bet they weren't wearing helmets "

Tragic, no matter how you slice it. Their lives end in the midst of their exitement for Rally & Race Week...
On another note, the report this morning said many of 'em WERE wearing helmets. Not that it's relevant in this circumstance as it appears they were run over by the tumbling SUV. The report also stated that wunna the BIKES drifted into the oncoming lane and the SUV swerved to avoid it. That set off the tragic event...
just heard one guy had a helmet on. he died.
riding side by side is one of the reasons. i live in the stoddard area there's no room for side by side riding on the back roads around here. they got to that corner could'nt make it side by side staying in there lane crossed the center line and hit the jeep.

Not saying I know what really happened in this instance. But the bigget problem - in my opinion - of those big-ass bikes riding side by side is that the inside bike is usually RIGHT ON the yellow line, leaving about 18 inces of his handlebars hanging out into oncoming traffic. I couldn't even fathom how many times I've seen that...

Off topic: Just to be clear, neither Degs, legalspeed or myself have the time to sit here and moderate everything that pisses people off. Part of the lure of this board is the simple fact that we DON'T moderate much...

Tragic. It's all the same passion on two wheels.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
A Biker is a Biker no matter what he/she rides. We all should remember we are the minority out there.
Sportbike or cruiser, doesn't matter. Another reminder to be careful and keep your head clear out there. Maybe they were riding side by side, but so what. I'm sure as sportbike riders, we've all been guilty at one time of crossing the yellow in a corner from going in too hot.
RIP.

As I said. RIP, very sad. I apologize if anyone got miffed by *my* comment. I made that flip statement because...
Fact: Majority of people at Bike Week are Harleyesque riders.
Fact: Majority of Harleyesque riders at Bike Week don't wear helmets
Fact: Majority of Harleyesque riders who DO wear helmets were those piece of crap salad bowl things.
My initial thought upon hearing "3 dead on bikes at start of Bike Week" was "They probably got hit by a stupid car cause cars suck" followed up by "probably weren't wearing proper helmets either"
If they were wearing full Dainese and Shoei's, then what can I say.. err 'sorry my guess / gut feeling was wrong?'
I don't care what you ride. Vespa, Harley, Rice, Race, whatever. I love bikes and have good friends in all types of riding. I do however always CRINGE when I ride thru CT, NH, RI and see all these meatballs riding around without lids, or those POS lids that are apparently DOT safe (rrright).
Who knows, we all know what we do is dangerous. If you get hit by a cement truck... no amount of gear is going to save you. It's always just tragic whenever Bike Week rolls around though and you see these death reports come in. Yea.. stick 50,000-100,000 bikers, in a helmetfree state, on winding backroads, (not to mention the booze), and guess what's going to happen.
I guess being hit by a car at over 25mph and having my helmet save my life makes me a little sensitive to it. I figure I've been on borrowed time ever since anyhow.

Bottomline.
If you are riding at Bike Week. Be extra vigilant, geared up, and smart about your riding. 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag always causes problems.
